People around the world are noisy about the annular eclipse this time or the transit of Venus along the surface of the sun on coming June 6. But my head is rather preoccupied with gold (composed of two letters in Japanese: pronunciation of “KIN”). According to Shoku Nihonn-ki in 749 (Japanese nearly oldest book), it is said that gold was first discovered in Mutsu-no-Kuni (present Miyagi prefecture). Emperor Shomu (at that time emperor) was so glad that he changed the era name to Tenpyo-kanho after the name of precious gold. Time went on from then, and a famous story that Marco Polo introduced Japan as a “Country of gold – Zipangu” is well known. This story was not a mere legend. The reason for the two times attack of Menggu to Japan was in fact Menggu’s ambition aiming at gold of Japan.
