THE CAMPUS CULTURE
At Microsoft's specially designed headquarters at Redmond, Washington, Gates deliberately set out to create an environment that suited the bright young people the company wanted to attract. With its simple aesthetics, open communal areas and green spaces, it resembled the college atmosphere familiar to many of those joining the company straight from university. Appropriately enough, it was called the Microsoft Campus (it was parodied in Douglas Coupland's 1994 novel Microserfs) and has grown over the years to resemble something of a sprawling unplanned suburb of its own.
ゲイツは、ワシントン州レッドモンドにある特別にデザインされたマイクロソフトの本部にて、優秀な若い人材を集めるのに適した環境を意図的に作ろうとした。シンプルなデザイン、オープンな共有エリア、植物が豊富なエリアなどが採用され、新卒社員にまだ馴染みが深い大学の環境に似せている。名前もそのまま「マイクロソフト・キャンパス」（1994年に出版されたダグラス・クープランドの小説、『Microserfs』でパロディ化された）と名づけられ、その後数年に渡って、無計画に広がる郊外の町のように大きくなった。
