「再建プロジェクトでは、時には実際に起こり得る一種の馬鹿げた茶番を演じることがある。それはすごいものだ。私自身、そのような状況下で、あらゆるタイプの人間を見つけあらゆるアクセントの言葉を聞く大規模でいかめしい委員会の中央で、道化を演じるのにたっぷり時間を使う。夕方や日曜日に建設用地の広い空地に行くと、かならず若い人だろうと年配の人だろうと、何人かに必ず「この間の芝居のシーンを演じてみます」と持ちかけられる。それはドラマチックな見方だったりコミカルな見方だったりするが、おそらく人をホロリとさせたりウィットに富んだりする、言葉では表しがたい人生の一コマなのだ。
