オタクとはまず、1970年代、日本で誕生したサブカルチャーのファンの総称である。
もともとは、アニメやSFのファンに限定した呼称であったが、明確な定義はく、現在はより広い領域のファンを包括しており、その実態は一様ではない。
しかし、辞書によれば、ある趣味・事物には深い関心を持つものの、それ以外の広汎な知識、また社会性・社交性は欠けている人物として説明される。
なぜ定義が定まらないのかというと、「強い興味や関心を持つ」という点でオタクはマニア・学者とは変わらない。
