In India, cashback is the new black

Online cashback and coupons site CashKaro has scored its latest batch of funding – INR 25 crore (approx US$3.8 million) in a series A round from Bangalore-based Kalaari Capital, marking the first time a local VC firm has invested in a cashback-oriented startup.

The vote of confidence from Kalaari is promising – it has previously invested in Indian success stories including Snapdeal and UrbanLadder – and also indicates a unique aspect of India’s tech market. While group-buying sites, most notably Groupon, have been in a slump since 2011, markets like India and China have been working well with online coupons.

Started in 2013, CashKaro is the product of founders Swati and Rohan Bhargava’s previous experience with London-based Pouring Pounds, which involves the cashback concept.

Swati and Rohan, based in Gurgaon, India, plan to use the money for global expansion, particularly in Southeast Asia, targeting Indonesia and Singapore. Android and iOS apps are also in the works, slated for release in 2016.

“Affiliate sites account for 15 to 20 percent of ecommerce sales in India, and because the model is performance-based, it is also recognized as a key marketing channel for retailers,” say the founders.

It’s a relatively fresh model for India, a market garnered toward bargains and savings with several successful ecommerce businesses already, and it’s working well for CashKaro. Within a year of its founding, the company crossed the Rs 1.8 crore (approx. US$ 270,000) mark, making them the first and the fastest in India to do so. The company has made a successful foray into India’s now booming mobile platform in 2011, and growth is currently 30 to 40 percent month-on-month.

Hot Japanese printing startup expands to Southeast Asia with local investment

There was something different about Yasukane Matsumoto, founder and CEO of Tokyo-based print job outsourcing startup Raksul, as he roamed through the halls at this year’s Tech in Asia Jakarta conference. The “startup” pass that he and other entrepreneurs usually wear around their necks had been replaced with one that said “investor.” It was no mistake.

Jakarta-based Prinzio is hoping to do for Indonesia what Raksul has been doing for Japan since 2009. It will connect users with local brick-and-mortar printing businesses, allowing them to shop around for the best price, place their order online, and have the order shipped to their door. The service is scheduled to go live in January, with an initial focus on Jakarta.

Raksul will lead a US$400,000 seed investment in Prinzio alongside East Ventures. (Disclosure: East Ventures is also an investor in Tech in Asia).

East Ventures is contributing US$50,000 toward the total, with Raksul dipping into its own funding to provide the rest. The investment gives Raksul a 20 percent stake in Prinzio.

“Obviously the first thing is hiring talent,” Prinzio founder and CEO Riky Tenggara tells Tech in Asia. “Most of the funds will go to operations and promotions.”

Riky was previously a business development manager and the head of sourcing at Lazada before joining aCommerce as a senior product manager. He founded Prinzio last month.

Not a business card company

Raksul raised US$33.7 million in series C funding this past February and Yasukane says the startup will be profitable by January or February.

Yasukane explains that Raksul will invest in one or two more printing startups in Southeast Asia by the end of 2016. Other markets he’s aiming to enter include the Philippines and Singapore. He’s also keen to eventually expand into India.

Is Raksul gunning for an IPO? Yasukane’s lips were sealed, but he did say that the startup has enough cash now.

Raksul now has more than 100 printing partners in Japan, covering all 47 prefectures – even the remote islands of Okinawa prefecture. Prinzio has already partnered with six in Jakarta.

Yasukane didn’t share revenue figures, but says that the most popular items for printing – contrary to the common misconception that Raksul is a “business card company” – are flyers. More than 60 percent of the startup’s revenue comes from them.

In many of these cases, the founder simply didn’t raise enough to hit the milestones they promised. Product development often takes twice what was anticipated, and many early stage companies simply didn’t have the capital to achieve what they hoped in advance of an A round. In the end, however, the entrepreneur benefits because they usually see a step up in valuation from the first to second seed.

This is also a bit of a semantic shift. The definition of seed funding has remained fairly stable. A rounds used to go to companies that had figured out the basics of their product but had some challenges with monetization, or vice versa. Today, A rounds are increasingly a sort of early growth capital.

“This is something we think can be used to reach older people and younger people as well,” said Faissal Houhou, who cofounded RoboCARE with Dominique Blasco. “And we think France is ready for something like this.”

As the founders have been touring with their robots to discuss the company’s plans, they’ve certainly generated tremendous attention from the French media.

At the moment, RoboCARE uses two different robots. The first is called Milo, and is built by Texas-based RoboKind. Milo’s face becomes animated when he speaks, and he makes small gestures and motions as he communicates.

The insiders already know each other, so managing them carefully is critical, and the signal from these insiders will speak volumes to the broader funding community.

Keep your existing investors engaged and excited. The other piece of advice that I hear myself constantly reminding our companies of is to keep the existing investors engaged and excited. Too often, those monthly emails or short phone calls or coffee are taken for granted. Sure, entrepreneurs are busy. But investors start to wonder how the company is faring if they don’t hear anything. In the case of a seed extension, it’s imperative to keep the momentum, especially when the Series A marketplace may provide a negative signal. Little nuggets like customer anecdotes, compelling stats, etc. that the partner on the deal can share with her/his partners help keep up the momentum.

Toyota launches $111m fund for startups working on AI, robotics, and hydrogen power

Toyota, the world’s largest automaker, announced overnight a JPY 13.5 billion (US$111 million) investment fund for startups developing advanced automotive technologies. The new fund is a collaboration between Toyota and two financial institutions: Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) and asset management company Sparx Group. The fund is named “Mirai Creation Investment Limited Partnership,” a hat tip to Toyota’s hydrogen-cell vehicle – which went on sale October 21 – and the Japanese word for “future.”

According to a Kyodo report, Toyota is contributing JPY 10 billion (US$82.3 million), SMBC JPY 3.3 billion (US$27.2 million), and Sparx Group the remaining JPY 200 million (US$1.6 million). Sparx Group will act as the fund’s general partner.

A Toyota press release states that target investment areas include artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and “technologies related to the production, supply, and use of hydrogen.” While the firm didn’t directly mention autonomous driving, AI and robotics are core technologies related to self-driving cars.
