Meanwhile, Midokura is a cloud enabling tech company and funraised 100 million yen in its seed round from some VC firms including NTT Investment Partners and datacenter company Bit Isle.

The company was co-founded by the former COO of Globis, a private MBA schooling company in Tokyo. During the past few months we’ve heard from some of the company’s team that they are developing the alpha version of some cloud-related apps, but no further details are available at this point. We’ll keep you posted if we hear anything.

Update: Wondershake just announced the total amount of this fundraising from several investors including Sunbridge was 360,000 US dollars. (Their announcement, in Japanese)

It’s OK to Localize a Web Service, But it’s Not Cool to Copy the Website

…A case in point is the new Chinese social media app PengYou which is a clone of the social media dashboard-cum-diary Path.

So it’s absolutely fine – and most welcome – that PengYou has made a localized kind of social media diary app that plugs into Sina Weibo, Douban, et al. In fact, I want to sign-up and try it out. But it crosses the line when it also so shamelessly copies Path’s entire website too.

ウェブサービスをローカライズするのはいいけれども、それをコピーするのはよくない。

中国の新ソーシャルメディアアプリPengYouはPathのパクリだ。

ほとんどは大丈夫なのだけれども、PengYouはローカライズしたSina Weiboにプラグインできるメディアダイアリーアプリを作っている。実際に登録して試してみたいのだが、恥知らずにもほどがあり、Path全体を丸々コピーしており一線を越えている。

Compare upeng.me and path.com (pictured side-by-side in the above image) and see the exact same design elements at the exact same heights, with a distinctive (and cool-looking) blurry photo of a girl offset by a close up of the app on an iPhone 4.


That’s taking it too far, and makes you wonder whether the start-up knows how to run itself, or just how to hit Ctrl-C and then Ctrl-V.

China’s Taste for Apple [INFOGRAPHIC]

The Infographic of the Day series visually expresses important stories from Asia and the world of technology.

Props go out to The Motley Fool blog for creating this very informative graphic about Apple’s recent activities in China.

To me, the most notable tidbit included here is the fact that China saw a six-fold increase in growth in the last 12 months. This is even more remarkable when you consider that iPhone in China costs about 21 percent of the GDP per capita. While I’m sure this would vary greatly if limited to urban areas only, I think it’s still pretty stunning.

You can be sure that China will be watching for the upcoming launch of the new iPhone 5 just as closely as the rest of the world.

To give one real-world example… We work with one brilliant entrepreneur who has great engineering and product skills. He’s extremely sociable, does business development naturally, and all his staff love him. Most importantly, he is very thoughtful and a great listener. (Most entrepreneurs talk too much and the signal-to-noise ratio is low). Not surprisingly, the company is preparing for a high profile exit. We wish we could clone more folks like him.

There are more key attributes, of course. Although these are the main traits which I think personally are more important. Feel free to add on in the comments.

There is one last factor which I’m hesitant to put because there are numerous counterexamples – it’s that, by and large, great entrepreneurs are also great human beings. You leave a meeting with them feeling that they are nice individuals, and often like to help them. Some have this quality in them naturally.

Wishscope: A Social Wishlist from Japan

Tokyo-based tech start-up Zawatt just announced it has received funding from Japan’s Cyber Agent Ventures and now is worth 20 million yen. The start-up is currently working on developing an iPhone app called Wishscope, which allows you to ask someone to help you make your wishes true and solve problems that you’re facing.

I just had an opportunity to interview the start-up’s CEO Daisaku Harada and CTO Nobuaki Suzuki at Shibuya’s incubation facility, EC-Navi Boat.

東京を拠点に置くスタートアップ企業Zawattは日本のCyber Agent Venturesから資金調達し時価総額は二千万円になった。この会社はWishscopeというiPhone向けのアプリを開発しいる。Wishscopeはユーザがほかのユーザの力を借り願い事かなえたり直面する問題を解決してくれるアプリだ。

この会社のCEO、ハラダ　ダイサクさんとCTOのスズキノブアキさんに開発現場である渋谷のEC-Navi Boatでインタビューすることができた。

Could you briefly tell us a little about Wishscope?

"Wishscope is a web service and iPhone app that helps people connect by matching someone in need of help with those who can contribute or help them. There users can assume two different roles in this service: a person can ask someone else to help them (i.e. be a ‘wisher’), or they can help someone do something (i.e. be a ‘hero’). A list of other users’ wants and wishes will be presented on our platform, and the users can take one if they find something that they can help with. Our service aims to help people solve problems and encourages them to connect with each other on our platform."

Wishscopeとはどういったものなのか簡潔におしえてください。

「Wishscopeは助けが必要なユーザーと、助けることのできるユーザーを結び付けるウェブサービスとiPhoneアプリです。このサービスは二つの側面があります。願いを叶えてほしいユーザーが助けを求める事。そしてユーザー自身が別のユーザーを助けれることです。ユーザーの願いはこのプラットフォームでリスト化され現れます。ユーザーが叶えられそうな願いを見つけるとそれを選ぶ事が出来ます。私たちのサービスはユーザーの願いや問題解決するため、それらをユーザー間でのつなぎ合わせを促進することです。」

What is the major difference between Wishscope and similar services such as Zaarly (U.S.) and Wondershake (Japan)?

Zaarly was launched when we were just preparing for launching our service. One of the main differences with them is our service is based on real name member registration. As for Wondershake, actually we aimed at encouraging people to connect but we use a sort of list presentation where users can share their interests. That’s the main gap.

Wishscopeとその他の似たようなサービス（Zaarly(U.S.)やWondershake(Japan)）との大きな違いは何ですか？

Zaarlyはちょうど私たちがこのサービスを立ち上げようとしているときに出てきました。大きな違いとして私たちのサービスは実名登録をしている所にあります。Wondershakeとの違いについて、Wishscopeはユーザーをつなげるだけでなく、ユーザーの興味を共有できるリストプレゼンテーションにあります。これが大きな違いです。

How do you motivate users?

"We have a payment system using PayPal that allows a ‘wisher’ to pay for a contribution from a ‘hero.’ Payment could be free (for voluntary work) or it could be higher than five US dollars."



You’re also facing some ‘chicken-egg’ problems since your launch. How do you overcome these issues?

"Our service can be used with a Facebook accounts, and this makes it easier for users to log in. Once you’ve signed in, our service will take your interests from your Facebook profile settings, and then find someone whose interests are very similar to yours. Wishscope presents the most recommended set of wish lists to you, encouraging you to connect with those users.

ユーザーのモチベーションは何ですか？

Paypalを使った支払いシステムで助けてもらった人から助けた人にお礼を渡すことができます。支払いは無料もしくは５ドル以上になります。

もし昼食で卵の問題にさしかかっているときそれにどう対処しますか？

「私たちのサービスはFacebookのアカウントで利用できるので簡単にログインできます。一度登録したらFacebookのプロフィールから趣味を読み込み同じ趣味を持つユーザーを探し出します。Wishscopeが最も適したウィッシュリストを表示し、そのユーザーとあなたをコネクトします。」

Starting with highly populated areas in Japan and the U.S., we will make our service available city by city as a sufficient number of both ‘wishers’ and ‘heroes’ jump on board. In some areas, we’re starting with giving a limited number of our service accounts to students attending a specific university. We think this is also a good idea because it stirs up high expectations."


What are your thoughts on international service expansion?

"We think there will be a business model where ‘wishers’ in developed countries ask some ‘heroes’ in developing countries to help. That may contribute to solving the North-South problem."

海外展開についてどう思われますか。

「先進国の願いをかねえてほしい人、発展途上国の助けれる人をつなぎ合わせるビジネスモデルを考えています。これは同時に南北の格差問題も解決するかもしれません。」

CTO Suzuki was previously working with Cybird, a well-known mobile app developer in Tokyo. A tech guy who has developed a Tokyo wants/give-away exchange site called Livris is highly committed to our service. An American, a British guy and a Korean-American girl are committed to developing the service and designing the user interface."

Who has invested in your service?

"A Hong Kong-based angel investor, Mr. Jun Emi from Netcapital Partners; Mr. Taiga Matsuyama from Kronos Fund; and another anonymous person are our seed investors. We’re very grateful for this additional fundraising from Cyber Agent Ventures which helped us greatly accelerate our international expansion and further our app development."

Finally, when the service or the app will be available?

"As mentioned just before, our service will be available on a city-by-city basis. Hopefully, we would like to launch the service in some Japanese and US cities in September, otherwise in October at the latest."
