Golden Gate Ventures floats new US$50M fund for Southeast Asian startups

The early-stage venture capital firm has already made its first close at US$35M from investors including Temasek and Eduardo Saverin

Golden Gate Ventures announced today that it is floating a US$50 million fund for startups in Southeast Asia. It has already closed US$35 million from an international mix of investors and advisors to the fund, including Temasek, Eduardo Saverin (Co-founder of Facebook) and Monitor Capital Partners, a European multi-family office.

Golden Gate Venturesは本日、東南アジアのスタートアップに対し5000万米ドルの投資をすると発表した。TemasekやEduardo Saverin（Facebookの共同創立者）やヨーロッパの共同企業であるMonitor Capital Partnersなどを含む、各国の投資会社や顧問会社からすでに3500万米ドルの資金供給を受けている。

Additional partners include Singapore’s National Research Foundation, NAVER (parent company of LINE messenger) and Far East Ventures, the venture capital arm of Far East Organization, one of the largest property developers in Southeast Asia.

This fund will allow Golden Gate Ventures to capitalise on the emerging middle class, strong government stimulation, high technology adoption rates in the Southeast Asian market, with more than one million new Internet users coming online in APAC each month, said an official statement.

“We’ve been quite fortunate with our companies to date. We’ve had no startups drop off the radar. On the contrary, we’ve been able to bet on terrific entrepreneurs building high-growth companies, such as baby related e-commerce Bilna, online social credit scoring company Lenddo. And we’ve worked with great regional co-investors such as Jungle Ventures,” said Jeffrey Paine, Founding Partner at Golden Gate Ventures.

At the moment, MangoPlate does not collect revenue from users of the app nor does it do so with restaurant owners. All content is generated by those who use its app, and as per Oh, the startup does not manipulate the ranking or reviews of restaurants. Having personalised recommendations as a feature also deter the company from somehow ranking one restaurant above another for revenue since users, while comparing the app with friends, will see the same results and feel duped. Users might not pay money, but they pay the company their trust and time. And if they ever feel cheated, they will leave.

I love going through reviews, be it for restaurants, hotels or cosmetics. I raise my eyebrows at 5.0 ratings and sunny reviews left by happy customers, and read everything else with joy. I love and obsess over the 4.8s and 4-and-a-half stars praising the hotel location, decor and receptionist, but complaining about the breakfast being paltry and unsatisfactory, perusing them to no end before I make a decision.
