كانت شخصياتهما متناقضة : هي منفتحة القلب ، بسيطة ، ودودة ، أما هو فكان معتد بشخصيته ، ساخر ومتعالي.في اغلب الاحيان كان الوضع مشابة للصراع الكوميدي بين " أبوت وكاستيلو". عندما كانت فيلومنا تقوم مبتهجة بالتعريف عن مارتن كانت تلقبه "مارتن سكسميث ، اخبار العاشرة". اما هو فيقوم بتصحيح تعريفها قائلا انه قد عمل في محطة بي بي سي، ثم يتبع ذلك بانه كان القائم على اعمال وكالة بي بي سي في موسكو كم انه قام بتغطية العمل في واشنطن العاصمة. ان كان للفيلم نقاط ضعف ، فهي النكات التي كانت احيانا تساهم بعض الشيء في اضافة الظرافة ، فما لفيلومنا تتحدث بلطف حول ارواب الاستحمام التي وجدتها في غرفة الفندق واتصالها بمارتن لتساله ان كان يريد روبا لنفسه ، او عندما تتبادل الحديث مع مقدمي الطعام المكسيكي حل لذة اكل الناشو.
