New Zopim makes it easier for you to engage your most important customers

Zopim, a Singapore startup that gives businesses the ability to chat live on their website with customers, has launched a new version of their service today.

One of the more prominent new features of this revamp is Triggers, which Zopim describes as a way to “proactively engage your most important customers.”

It works by alerting you when key customers drop by your site. Zopim can track howthey got to your site, perhaps via a Google search on your company or product, a click on an adword, or a blogpost sponsored by you.

their motivations (what they search for, which referring URL they came from)
their thought processes (the sequence of pages they looked at)
their interests (the page they look at the longest, the questions they ask)
their background (country they are from, email, so on)
their face (grabbed from public spaces like Gravatar)

Other noteworthy refinements include the conversion of the dashboard from Flash to HTML5, which makes it compatible with the iPhone and the iPad, improvements to dashboard user experience, and a translation feature for chats in foreign languages.

In a press release, Zopim claims that it has surpassed their American counterparts in terms of user traction, including Y-Combinator startup Olark, in their homeground. It has done so despite being an outsider in the country, bootstrapping their way to making US$1 million in revenue.

Hong Kong, Startups, and Bootcamp

Hong Kong, like Singapore, is a city that is a financial hub for many international businesses, but still a small market. Similar to Singapore, it is a place with a growing number of startups and in fact we have covered some of them here.

In an email exchange, Paul Orlando, who runs Startup Bootcamp in Hong Kong tells me that the current Hong Kong startup scene reminds him of New York in 2008. He describes the current Hong Kong tech ecosystem:

People are coming together, there are more events, people are very helpful to others in the tech community. But there is also a lot of work to be done to develop that community.

Instead, he urges startups to be more creative in their pursuit of talent, convincing smart people that working in startup is a more rewarding journey — in terms of money or experience (or both).

Apparently, startups in Hong Kong are growing. In fact, reports that the startup scene in Hong Kong is booming/escalating have appeared on CNNGO and Forbes over the last two years. But have things really improved? Orlando says that Hong Kong is losing its edge with minimal tech entrepreneurship happening in the country. He elaborated:

This [lack of tech entrepreneurship] is detrimental to the city’s long-term competitiveness. An antidote to all of this in Hong Kong is currently grassroots entrepreneurship. There is no other bootcamp or accelerator program operating in Hong Kong — even activities by the government do not fit this role.

So Orlando sets out to work on his startup bootcamp in hopes of catalyzing the tech ecosystem in Hong Kong. The bootcamp is a three-month program that aims to help entrepreneurs shape their products and be ready for the market. The course will be based on the lean startup concepts and Orlando’s experience as an entrepreneur back in New York City. The program is open for local and international entrepreneurs. In the first Hong Kong bootcamp, Orlando said that he was surprised to see startups from California who travelled all the way overseas to take part in his program.

Nepal-based Vidinterest.com adopted the Pinterest idea of a social pinboard, but focuses just on video sharing and discovery. It is essentially a skin for YouTube, Vimeo, and Dailymotion videos but I must say that it does help me find videos that I like. Every user can create their own playlist, just like boards on Pinterest and… eh… playlists on YouTube. As with YouTube, users can follow others’ videos sharing updates.

Tmall Hit RMB 20bn in First Half of 2012

Alibaba’s B2C subsidiary Tmall just revealed its score card for the first half of this year: total turnover hit RMB 20 billion, up 200% yoy. It is estimated that by year’s end the number will exceed RMB 50 billion.

Let’s walk through the dazzling numbers. In Q1, Tmall’s turnover was merely RMB 8 billion, and then with the grand B2C price war starting since May, the number rose to 12 billion in Q2.
