Then there is Tradekey, which is a B2B marketplace for connecting small- and medium-sized businesses across the world. Established in 2005, TradeKey has a member base of over seven million from 240 countries, and over 10 million buyers and sellers visit the website every month. The world’s third largest B2B portal, Tradekey is pushing China’s Alibaba.com hard.

Following the examples of Tohfay and Tradekey are newer sites like Daraz.pk and Labels E-Store (pictured), which both want to export Pakistani fashion to the world. Daraz.pk has just opened its cupboard to the international market, while Labels has been delivering internationally since inception last year. Partnering with DHL, both firms now deliver products to Pakistanis abroad, who are known for their high spending. Generally on trips back home to Pakistan, they return with large suitcases filled with locally designed clothes and jewellery, but now they can just as easily shop from the comfort of their home in any nation and have those items delivered internationally.

Asia’s Fashion E-Commerce is Huge, and Americans Don’t Understand the Market (INFOGRAPHIC)

SP eCommerce recently released an interesting infographic about Asia’s fashion e-commerce industry. Regular readers should know that this vertical e-commerce is definitely on the rise in Asia, topped by the recent boost of confidence from Zalora’s $100 million funding round and Reebonz’s recent $40 million investment.

SP eCommerceは、最近アジアのファッションeコマース業界に関する興味深いインフォグラフィックを発表した。定期読者ならご存じだと思うが、投資ラウンドで最近1億米ドルを調達し投資家の信頼をかなり集めているZaloraを筆頭に、4000万米ドルの資金を調達したReebon等、ジャンル特化型のバーティカルコマースがアジアでは着実に伸びている。

The infographic tells us Asia is the biggest offline retail market in the world. When it comes to e-retail, Asia’s market is going to grow so big that Alibaba’s transaction volume this year alone will eclipse the transaction volume of all US’ e-commerce companies combined.

The fashion industry is the fastest growing segment in Asia’s e-commerce industry, and we’re seeing a lot of US brand retailers eyeing the Asian market with mostly online presence. But according to surveys conducted by the SP eCommerce team, consumers don’t think US brands really understand how to win over the local online Asian market. One such case is not catering to cash on delivery, a popular local payment method.

Israeli Medical Startup Eon Surgical is Acquired by Teleflex

Eon Surgical Ltd, a late-stage Israeli startup that has advanced a minimally invasive micro-laparoscopy surgical platform technology, was acquired by Inc (NYSE: TFX), a US-based leading global provider of medical devices for critical care and surgery. This marks the first exit in Israel for Singapore-based global super angel investor, Rutledge Vine Capital (RVC). Eon Surgical’s key investors included RAD BioMed, a success-accelerator for Israeli biomedical startups.

If you live here in Japan, you probably know what it’s like to be standing on a crowded train. Most of us spend that time with some mobile games, or messaging with friends. But you can get a lot of work done too if you try, and I’m finding lately that there are more apps available than ever before that can enable you to write on a mobile with ease. Since my work is primarily writing and editing, this is a wonderful thing!

Many of these apps use a text format called Markdown. If you’re not familiar with it, don’t worry. It is just a plain text markup language that is easily converted to HTML. But trust me when I say that if you write for the web (i.e. if your final output is HTML), you should be writing in Markdown. It’s far more readable, and from an editor’s point of view that’s invaluable. It’s also really great if you happen to be writing on a mobile device. Have a look at the two documents below. HTML is on the right and the Markdown equivalent is on the left. Which is easier to read/write/edit? Which would be easier to read/write/edit on a mobile device?

Create tag links for common keyword on our blog
Create a regular Markdown links from a URL on the clipboard
Make a blockquote with an ID and permalink
Add an abbreviation tag with help/hover text for things like Japanese words

IDとパーマリンクを使って引用タグを作成する。
日本語のような外国語用に、abbrタグにヘルプ/ホバーテキストを追加する。

利用方法は、下のデモ動画で確認することができる。ここで使用したスニペットをまとめたものは、コチラからダウンロードできるので、用途に合わせて変更して欲しい。でも、ネット上には自由に利用できるアプリが沢山あるので、常に自分専用のツールを用意する事が可能だ。

5. Poster

For anyone who publishes with WordPress, as we do here on SD, you’re probably aware that it’s not the friendliest system to work with on a mobile device. But invariably I’ll need to access our site from mobile, sometimes to edit a post when I’m on the train or maybe just to make a late night edit when my MacBook isn’t nearby.

Poster is a great interface to WordPress, and it accepts Markdown input too which is pretty great. But I really just like it mostly because of its clean layout and design. Of course having access to custom fields is a big help too, as is the ability to add tags, categories, edit the permalink, and save as draft rather than publish live.

WordPressを使用してSDで発行している我々と同じようにWordPressを使っていれば、モバイルデバイス用のシステムとしては、決して使勝手が良いとは思ってないだろう。しかし、電車から投稿の編集をしたり、深夜にちょこっと編集する際、手元にMacBookがなければ、モバイルで同社のサイトに常にアクセスする必要がある。

Posterは、WordPressのインターフェイスとしては最適で、Markdownのデータ入力にも対応しているので、かなり重宝している。だが、気に入っている本当の理由は、そのすっきりした見やすいレイアウトとデザインだ。もちろん、タグやカテゴリーの追加、パーマリンクの編集等のカスタマイズに対応している点も、そのまま発行せずに、ドラフトとして保存できるの点も本当に便利で気に入っている。
