Singapore’s VanityTrove acquires Glamybox to enter Vietnam

Singapore beauty subscription service VanityTrove has acquired Glamybox, a similar company from Vietnam. This deal gives VanityTrove a foot in the door to Vietnam’s USD 372M cosmetics industry. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In August 2012, the company had around 5,000 subscribers and over 15,000 shipments. It was also in the midst of raising a round of funding.

Its brands partnership team increased from a staff strength of 3 last year to 13 employees in January 2013 to accommodate demand from beauty brands.

The startup’s headcount of 40 is spread out across five countries, with its top three markets subscriber-wise being Taiwan, Singapore, and Thailand.

The company has been expanding rapidly this year, in tandem with a rise in quantity of beauty box startups across Asia and the retreat of Rocket Internet’s Glossybox. The Samwer Brothers outfit now only focuses on Japan, South Korea, and China, the three biggest cosmetics markets in Asia.

The beauty box concept first originated with BirchBox, a New York City based startup. It has since spread rapidly around the world, first to Europe, then to Asia. At last count, Birchbox has some 100,000 subscribers, while Glossybox has 200,000.

By comparing four tech cities of China (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and HK), the author uncovered the potential of Hong Kong in Internet population, access, and censorship. It is shown that 90% of Hong Kong citizens are online, and its neighbor Shenzhen comes the second while Shanghai unexpectedly has the least netizens (66.2%).

Project NOAH (Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards) is the official mobile application of the Philippines’ Department of Science and Technology (DOST)’s website of the same name. The app provides a lot of useful tools and information such as weather news and flood forecasting and warning. It also provides a map view of the Philippine ‘Area of Responsibility’ (PAR), rainfall contours, chance of rain, radar images (for Subic, Tagaytay, Cebu, Hinatuan, Tampakan), sensors, and typhoon forecasts. Screenshots and information from the app can be shared on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Gmail, and even via Bluetooth. But this doesn’t include flood mapping, which is where the next app comes in…

In Anticipation of Next Year’s Election, Indonesian Government Launches Online Voter Database

The Indonesian government has been embracing the internet as of late, and yesterday the General Elections Commission (KPU) put the temporary voter list (DPS) online to help citizens check their voter status more easily. The online list, which can be accessed through KPU.go.id, was built in preparation for the upcoming presidential election next year. This latest feature is definitely a step up for the Indonesian voting process.

インドネシア政府は最近インターネットを取り込んでおり、昨日、総選挙委員会(KPU)は暫定的な投票者リスト(DPS)をオンラインで提供し、国民が有権者としての状態を簡単に確認できるようにした。KPU.go.idでアクセス可能なオンラインリストは、来年に実施が予想されている大統領選挙に向けて構築されたものである。これの最新機能は、インドネシアの投票プロセスにとってステップが１つ上がったものである。

The temporary voter list has been one of the most common problems in the Indonesian election process since bygone days. Past issues with the list include people who are already dead still being on it, recording the same person multiple times (which becomes a problem if that person takes advantage of it to vote multiple times), and not listing people who should have voting rights. The new online list solves that last problem, as now people can check long before the election starts to see if they are a registered voter. And if not, they can immediately register themselves at the appropriate government office.

Checking your voter status is quite simple; you just need to input your identity number in the search box. Afterwards you can see your voter data, including your identity and designated voting venue. So far there are about 177 million temporary registered voters on KPU’s offline database and 104 million of them are already in the new online system.

The offline database is not yet complete though, as there are data from three Indonesian provinces – South Sulawesi, Northern Maluku, and Papua – not yet registered to KPU’s database. As to why the online database conversion isn’t finished yet, it is because there are a few issues like small bandwidth in regional government offices that slows the sending of online database to the central office.

The Indonesian government has been implementing more online solutions recently. The last Jakarta governor election used an e-counting voting system, while the central government just launched an information portal called Open Government Indonesia.
