Facebook’s newest deep learning system makes samples of images that humans think are real 40% of the time

Researchers at Facebook have taken a step closer to a holy grail of artificial intelligence known as unsupervised learning. They’ve come up with a way to generate samples of real photographs that don’t look all that fake.

In fact, the computer-generated samples — of scenes featuring planes, cars, birds, and other objects — looked real to volunteers who took a look at them 40 percent of the time, according to a new paper on the research posted online yesterday. Facebook has submitted the paper for consideration in the upcoming Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) conference in Montreal.

The research goes beyond the scope of supervised learning, which many startups and large companies, including Facebook, use for a wide variety of purposes.

Supervised deep learning traditionally involves training artificial neural networks on a large pile of data that come with labels — for instance, these 100 pictures show geese — and then throwing them a new piece of data, like a picture of a ostrich, to receive an educated guess, like whether or not the new picture depicts a goose.

With unsupervised learning, there are no labeled pictures to learn from. It’s sort of like the way people learn to identify things. Once you’ve seen one or two cell phones, you can recognize them immediately.

Personalization study findings: Email is top channel; social, web, ads next; data needs vary

Personalization is critical. Customers expect it. It increases click-throughs, open rates, conversions, retention, and ultimately revenue.

But how do you “do” personalization?

It’s different at every step of the customer journey — and there’s a lot that goes into it. There are more channels and devices to reach customers than ever. The data, content, and delivery mechanisms necessary to personalize messages vary for each of them.

That’s why we’ve been surveying you, our readers, to understand what you’re doing and how you’re doing it.

How Chirp enables easy data transfers using nothing but sound

Chirp, a London-based technology company that lets you transfer data between devices using nothing but audio clips, has announced it’s opening its platform to developers as it looks to increase the uptake of the underlying technology.

Available for Android and iOS, Chirp made headlines back in 2012 with its quirky data-transfer technology that uses a “digital birdsong” only identifiable by Chirp on other devices. Just select a compatible file from your phone, click the “chirp” button, and other devices can access the media instantly.

While there are other easy ways of sharing files and data in real-time, such as Bluetooth, Chirp doesn’t require devices to pair in advance, there is no need to set up an account, and it’s ultimately a much quicker way of sharing files.

Tapping the cloud, Nimble Collective has formed to make it easier to create and distribute videos produced by the animation community. It has also raised $1 million in seed funding, and it is announcing today a strategic partnership with Citrix to deliver its services via the cloud.
