Dropmyemail Passes Half Million Users, is Working on Second Round of Funding

Just 50 days into launching the Dropmyemail service for email cloud backup and migration, the Singapore-based startup has announced its 525,000th user, averaging the addition of 10,500 new users per day. The freemium service was first launched on March 1 at DEMO Asia Singapore. Plus, the team says that it’s busy raising its second round of funding.

It sure does reflect the immense potential of Dropmyemail.com as a company, judging by how reliant all of us can be on our emails and how it is also one of the top internet activities. I absolutely cannot imagine one day waking up to losing all my data within my email. In fact, I was one of the fewer than 2 percent of all users who experienced the Gmail outage which happened a couple of days back.

On its growth, CEO and founder John Fearon commented:

There are an estimated 3.4 billion emails in the world today; 75 percent are consumer, not business emails. Our aim is to back-up the internet, so we have lots of work to do.

According to a press release from Dropmyemail, its current user-base follows a pattern close to the general geographic spread of email users around the globe; as released by market research firm The Radicati Group, it found that 47 percent are in Asia Pacific, 23 percent in Europe, and 14 percent in North America.

Dropmyemail のプレスリリースによると、現在のユーザ層のパターンは世界のEメールユーザの地理的な分散に近いものだという。市場調査会社 The Radicati Group の発表によれば、アジア太平洋に47％、欧州に23％、北米に14％がいる。

John claims that the team currently does not have any direct competitor offering a freemium email backup for consumers as comprehensive as theirs. There are a couple of companies within the cloud space offering backup services, such as Dropbox; or corporate website backups, such as Backupify, but that last one is closer to its sister product, Dropmysite.

Dropmyemail was previously seed funded by Crystal Horse Investments, Stanley Street Labs, and undisclosed individual investors.

The team is also expecting to launch several other products and service extensions in the next several months, as well as offering more backup options to support the increase in number of users.

Tencent’s Group Messaging App Gets English Name, WeChat, Support for More Languages

Just as we’d heard was about to happen, Chinese social media giant Tencent (HKG:0700) has renamed its group messaging app, Weixin, as “WeChat” for international users. This comes in a new update to v4.0 for the iOS version – though not yet for Android or other platforms – which also adds support for Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, and Portuguese. The inclusion of many southeast Asian languages is surely significant, as we’ve heard Tencent execs say that they’re planning to focus on Indonesia, especially in terms of mobile internet.

Other new features in the globally-minded WeChat app include the ability to forward photos from one friend to another, add a star to favourite contacts, add a location to your messages, font size customization, and a streaming photo journal of your day’s highlights. Perhaps more significantly, there’s also the newly-added ‘Circles’ (pictured right) which seems to be copied from Google+ and which Tencent will also bring to its Chinese social networks, such as QQ.

Just last month, Tencent CEO Pony Ma said that Weixin – I mean, WeChat – had passed the 100 million user milestone, which makes it the biggest group messaging app in the world. Though we don’t know how many of those are active users.

WeChat opened up to international users late last year with an English version of the app, and the ability to register with a phone number via SMS in nearly every country. It’s up against the likes of Whatsapp, Korean-made Kakaotalk, and also the Xiaomi-owned Miliao, to name but three of the many group messaging challengers.

63% of Asian Telcos Working on 4G Networks, Not Many Yet In Action

Right now across Asia, 63 percent of mobile telcos have rolled out 4G LTE services, or are now conducting trials or have firm plans. That’s the finding of ABI Research in a new paper on the infrastructure for the next-gen mobile data network that will eventually supersede 3G.

Of course, trials and plans do not help consumers stream any movies at blazing web speeds, so the reality is that 4G is fully deployed in very few areas of the Asia-Pacific region – mainly in Japan and South Korea. Indeed, ABI notes:

Out of 110 networks, 10 operators (9 percent) have commercial 4G LTE networks up and running. Another 58 (53 percent) either have specific plans to roll out LTE or are conducting trials.

That’s some way behind the deployment rates among North American and European carriers. Jake Saunders, ABI’s vice president of forecasting, added:

We estimate total Asia-Pacific mobile capital expenditure to reach US$53.3 billion by the end of 2012. 62 percent is still very much earmarked for radio access network deployment. Other key investment areas include EPC and gateway upgrades to the core network at 9 percent, as well as improving in-building wireless coverage into dense urban centers at 5.7 percent.

In Japan, we recently reported that NTT Docomo has two million LTE subscribers; whilst in neighboring South Korea, SK Telecom paid nearly a billion dollars for a key LTE spectrum last year, and is now busy wooing consumers with smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE, hoping to lure people away from 3G.

China, meanwhile, has said that 4G can wait another two to three years for an initial roll-out while the nation concentrates on strengthening its 3G infrastructure. China will use the LTE-TDD standard that Apple will reportedly support. Trials are indeed underway, but are limited in scope even within the select half dozen cities where it’s being tested.

We’ve not seen so much action out of India, so thankfully ABI has been keeping its eyes peeled there:

Heavy RAN [LTE-RAN, a different network standard] investment has been taking place in India. A number of operators are jockeying for position in a very competitive marketplace. On April 10, Bharti Airtel became the first operator to launch 4G LTE services in India, in Kolkata. Bharti Airtel hopes to launch 4G services in Bangalore before June 2012. Equipment spend is not just occurring in 4G. The Indian operator, Idea, has continued to roll out 2,270 2G cell sites and 1,176 3G cell sites in the past year.

Singapore will allocate airwaves for 4G next year, says Reuters, but an island-wide rollout is not expected until 2016.

If passion is missing in the equation, it makes life tough and less colorful. The culture wouldn’t be complete. Your users and customers wouldn’t feel that your product offering is sincere either. Passion isn’t tangible nor measurable but it is an important piece that makes a startup well-oiled and “equipped.”

Cooliris Redesigns LiveShare for Mobile and Web

A few days ago Cooliris announced the launch of its redesigned LiveShare service. With the LiveShare app, users can send messages, post photos and photo collages, or share your location. Billed as ‘beautiful messaging for mobile and web’ the service presents photos in a smart-looking layout, and you can add messages or location too if you like. The app is capable of batch photo uploads [1], which is pretty handy as well.

Personally, it took me a little while to wrap my head around exactly what LiveShare was trying to do with this app – after all, it does many things, and I couldn’t really see any potential problem that this was solving, at least not for me. But admittedly I’m a little picky and somewhat minimalist with the services I adopt.

While there’s certainly lots of overlap between the functions of LiveShare and other social sharing services (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Path, etc) one interesting feature of LiveShare is that it lets you share with other people who don’t have the app installed, as long as they have an email address or a US phone number [2]. While I wouldn’t make use of this feature, I expect someone of an older generation might appreciate this, as they’re likely to have friends who adopt slowly to new social networks [3]. On this point, Cooliris’s APAC director, Derek Tan, tells us:

We still see people communicating outside of Facebook as family members may not be on it. Also, on Facebook a communication among a smaller group that includes different elements like text, photos and locations is still very broken. So, unlike any other app out there instead of siloing text messaging, photo sharing and other communication features, the all-new LiveShare is built from the ground up to seamlessly combine these elements into a visually exciting experience across mobile and web for consumers who value speed and beauty.

For those who already have a wide network on Facebook, you can login with those credentials and post directly to the social network from the LiveShare app.

We’ve written about the service before, and its capabilities for allowing groups of people to contribute to a single photo collection, which can be very useful for event coverage. While that function is still in the web version of LiveShare, it’s not in the current mobile version – although I’m told “there are thoughts” that it might be added soon.
