Their new technology surpasses previous QR and visual QR technology, making the codes almost indistinguishable from regular images or graphics. The adoption of QR codes has been exceptionally high in China due to their use on social messaging platforms as well as other in-app e-commerce services.

Most startups should not be taking VC money — says the VCHoning in on Asia, many of the startups coming out of the region are still “clones” — replicating business models from elsewhere and localising — that need to be able to defend aggressively and expand quickly in order to not be supplanted by competition. This, Paine argues, is one situation where VC money can really come in handy as opposed to bootstrapping.But he also has some persuasive arguments as to why most startups should not take VC money at all; in fact, only two-three per cent should. This is before you get to the fact that most, even if they do want to raise, will never be successful in doing so anyway.
There is clearly a time and a place for bootstrapping, and in fact in most scenarios (97 per cent) this will be the only way forward because raising VC funding is not possible, or you simply don’t want to give away the equity — or be accountable to shareholders.But if you do need and manage to raise VC funding, think of it as a war. And if you’re with a VC that isn’t there to check your desperate WhatsApp messages at 3AM when your world is falling apart (or seems to be), then perhaps you had better reassess that relationship — because it may just be the most important one your startup will ever have. I’m sure Paine would agree.

Flamestower and Roadie Tuner are just two successful hardware projects among a wealth of wildly popular crowdfunding campaigns. In 2012, Pebble Technology famously raised over $10 million from nearly 69 thousand backers for its eponymous smartwatch. This year, the company launched another campaign on Kickstarter for its new generation smartwatch – Pebble Time, raising over $20 million.Other examples include Oculus Rift, a virtual reality headset for video games invented by then 20 year-old Palmer Luckey. The device was dubbed as a breakthrough for the industry and over $2.4 million was raised on the Kickstarter platform. Subsequently, Oculus Rift was acquired by Facebook for $2 billion dollars.
Despite all the high-profile rags-to-riches stories in crowdfunding, pulling off a successful campaign is no easy feat.“Crowdfunding is highly dependent on marketing,” said Jalgha. “You could have a brilliant project, but if it’s not exposed enough, it might easily die off and not succeed.”“In the first few days of launch, a lot of marketing push is required to reach out to the media – this is what makes it or breaks it,” he continued.To Kell, a crowdfunding campaign, while useful, is not the be all and end all for a company’s success.
“You can’t count on having enough money just from your crowdfunding campaign to manufacture the product. You have to be prepared to raise money especially if it’s a product that’s going into mass production,” said Kell, who had managed to raise a small seed round of investment from angel investors prior to Flamestower’s Kickstarter campaign.“(Had we not done that), the $60,000 we raised on Kickstarter would not have been enough.”
“This is good news for China business and brands, which are shrugging off negative stereotypes, ‘cheap, low-skill, low-tech’,” said Sarah Reiter, the president of FutureBrand Asia Pacific in an interview with Jing Daily. “Like Taiwan and Japan in previous decades, China is now shifting towards being associated with ‘modern, sophisticated, high-tech’.”During the manufacturing process in 2014, Kell lived in Shenzhen for several months, talking to as many people as he could and learning about the manufacturing process and product development cycle in China.
That's some advice I'd pass on to any budding entrepreneurs – make sure you protect yourself with manufacturing agreements and intellectual property protection.The problem of people setting up companies and websites for fake goods has got worse over the past six months. True Religion and Mulberry do a lot of work in this space and have been really helpful to me to help shut down cyber crime.After the Google advert I was contacted by loads of people who were inspired to set up their own business – I really like the element of being able to encourage others, so maybe I'll look to do more of that.
ChengduMatt Vegh of Cloud TimeMatt Vegh is the quintessential old China hand, but more specifically, ‘the’ old Chengdu hand, which no one else gets to say. Fifteen years of boots on the ground in China’s most dynamic interior city will confirm that.Everyone from Chengdu city governmental agencies, multiple municipalities and the provincial governments rely on Matt to help create strategic framework models across the full spectrum of the industry. He also penned the 12 step Eden report; an internal white paper for the internationalization of Chengdu, all of which has been implemented.

BeijingMatt Conger of SeekPandaMatt Conger Beijing“Beijing Welcomes You” is a go-to karaoke song for most foreigners in China. When it comes to foreign entrepreneurs, I’d say this song’s title is 70% accurate.We founded SeekPanda, an O2O network of on-demand translators and interpreters, in Beijing because the city naturally attracts both sides of our network: business travelers and high-end language professionals. We evaluate our “pandas” with in-person meetings. No other city can match Beijing as a magnet for the talent we recruit.

In 2011 he went back to his roots in China, and settled down in Shanghai.“As China transforms itself into a leader in the global economy at such a rapid pace, I saw the opportunity to create a platform where people from around the world can learn Chinese and get plugged in to the dynamic, complex, and modern culture in China today.”
“As an important mark of the first step of our journey, we recently released the first version of the Amanda app on iOS, and have received quite a lot positive user feedback. The app lets users learn Mandarin through trending stories in Chinese social media.”“Our product targets a global audience, and Shanghai is an international hub where you can find target users, foreign talents, and potential partners across all industries. We are also located very close to universities, which makes it convenient to recruit fresh grads.”

Shanghai Pros:Shanghai is a very charming and livable city, definitely the most western style offering on the mainland. This means attracting foreign talent is comparatively easy.Shanghai Cons:As far as the mainland goes, Shanghai has the highest cost of living in China, including both residential and office space. While the city’s foreign focus is attractive, the industry is still very focused on finance and retail, not tech
ShenzhenMike Michelini of Unchained Apps“My name is Michael Michelini is the VP of Business Development at Unchained Apps Ltd. They have produced a series of mobile apps, including Chinese learning (WCC Dictionary), to task management (TaskLabels) and social media (Social Agent).”“We chose Shenzhen as we are right on the Hong Kong – Shenzhen border, some of our team is based in Hong Kong, while others are in Shenzhen. We get to maximize both sides of the border with access to China’s large talent pool as well as the network of business development contacts in Hong Kong.”
Shenzhen Pros:As a manufacturing city undergoing rapid gentrification, Shenzhen still has a relatively low cost of operations and living for the time being. The big draw of Shenzhen is its dual proximity to manufacturing hubs, consumer electronics markets and factories as well as Hong Kong, a hotspot for innovation. There are also lots of young entrepreneurs, both Chinese and Western, not to mention warm weather.Shenzhen Cons:While the city is still developing, costs are rapidly rising. There is also enormous competition for developers in the region, with giants like Tencent and Lenovo scrabbling to grab them up as quickly as they can.
However Xiaomi’s timing raises doubts. The initial peak in adoption for similar products is dropping, and the annualized yield of other popular funds fell from record high of over 7% to around 4%. Huoqibao currently offers 7-day annualized return rate of 4.95%, slightly higher than Yuebao’s, however, it is difficult to say whether they’ll be able to keep it up.
The face recognition startup that Jack Ma wants to use for selfie payments just got $25M in fundingFace++, a face recognition tech startup from Beijing, today announced it raised an additional US$25 million as part of its series B round that began in November last year (h/t to 36kr). The fresh funding brings the company’s series B to a total of US$47 million. Innovation Works and Ignition Partners contributed to the initial funding, while the more recent investors have not yet been disclosed.
More recently, Face++ was paraded in front of an audience at Cebit by none other than Alibaba founder Jack Ma. Ma demonstrated face recognition-enabled mobile payments, in which the user’s face is substituted for a password to buy something online. While this technology doesn’t yet exist for consumers, it’s only a matter of time before it’s implemented for real.
Each chirp lasts a couple of seconds, and the receiving device “listens” for a handful of notes played quickly in a certain order, in a certain range, and at a certain speed. While there are other easy ways of sharing files and data in real-time, such as Bluetooth, Chirp doesn’t require devices to pair in advance, there is no need to set up an account, and it’s ultimately a much quicker way of sharing files.
