道頓堀

１７世紀のはじめ、安井道頓によって運河として整備された道頓堀。まもなくその南側には芝居小屋が集められ、「道頓堀五座」と称された大きな劇場をはじめ中小の劇場や多くの料理屋が軒を連ね、長く日本最大の芝居街として賑わいました。今では文楽の街として知られる大阪ですが、当時は歌舞伎の本場として数々の名優や多くの観客を集めました。日本を代表する戯曲家・近松門左衛門が活躍したのも、この道頓堀なのです。

Dotombori

In the beginning of 17th century, Dotombori was maintained as a canal by Dotom Yasui. Soon after, playhouses were collected in the south side, and big theaters, medium and small theaters and many restaurants stand side by side that were called "Dotombori Goza (Goza means five seats)" and were crowded with people as the biggest show town in Japan for a long time. Nowadays, Osaka is known as a puppeteer town, but back then as the best place for Kabuki, numerous great actors and many audiences gathered there. It was this Dotombori where a dramatist of joruri, Monzaemon Chikamatsu who represents Japan was active.
