Recall principles
Leading by example really goes back to the basic principles you want to run your business by. You must go back to the principles and compare them to what you are displaying by your behavior. All too often, it is easy to expect one thing and live another. We all do it.
When you recognize inconsistencies, try to narrow the gap between expectations and behavior. When you fall short, admit it. Pride is perhaps the most negative quality that you can exhibit when trying to motivate your employees. If you seem too good to live up to your own standards, those who work for you will have no motivation to live up to them, either.
