Imagine carefully tended lawns surrounding wooded areas, and low-slung buildings with grey-white facing and mirrored windows nestling in-between. The original buildings were designed in the shape of an X to maximize the natural light inside. Unlike the open-¬plan buildings popular elsewhere in the corporate world, each office was fully enclosed with a door, and intended for one occupant.

This was a deliberate attempt to create the sort of solitude and privacy Gates felt was necessary to allow his employees to 'sit and think' as he said he wanted them to.
