There are many stories and legends about lost civilezations, and among the most famous must be those about the long-lost kingdom of Atlantis. The West came to know of Atlantis through the Ancient Greek writer Plato. According to the story, the civilization of Atlantis began on a large island, some 550 kilometers long by 360 kilometers wide.　A mountain rose there, sloping down evenly in all directions. On top of the mountain, in a palace, lived a family with a beautiful daughter called Cleito.

失われた文明には様々な逸話や伝説があるものだ。中でも最も有名なものはずっと前に失われたアトランティス王朝に関するものだ。西洋は古代ギリシャの作家のプラトンによって、アトランティスを知ることになった。プラトンの話によると、アトランティス文明は縦５５０キロメートル、横３６０キロメートルほどの大きな島で始まった。山がそびえ立ち、全ての方角に均等な斜面になっていた。その山の頂上には王宮があり、クレイトと呼ばれる美しい娘のいある家族が住んでいた。
