1) Design Crowdsourcing Originated in Asia

While the term crowdsourcing was coined in 2006, the act of crowdsourcing has existed for decades (if not centuries). There are various crowdsourcing timelines and various theories on the origins of crowdsourcing. The earliest example of design crowdsourcing that I’ve been able to find occurred in Japan. In 1936, Toyota crowdsourced its logo and received 27,000 entries. This contest remains a world record, in terms of response. Toyota remains a huge proponent of crowdsourcing, and in 2013 it will host its 7th annual crowdsourced Dream Car Design Contest).

クラウドソーシングという言葉が作られたのは2006年だがクラウドソーシングというやり方は何百年とはいわなくても数十年も前からあった。クラウドソーシングにつての歴史はさまざまに言われており、その起原についてもさまざまな説がある。
日本で行われたデザインクラウドソーシングが私が見つけた最も古い例だ。1936年にトヨタが同社のロゴをクラウドソーシングし2万7000点の応募作品が寄せられた。反響という点でこのコンテストが未だに世界記録を保持している。トヨタはその後もクラウドソーシングを強力に支持しておりDream Car Design Contestを毎年主催している。2013年には7回目のコンテストが開かれる予定だ。
