一般的に、活動それ自体が目的で、その活動の遂行から得られる満足以外に明白な報酬を受け取らないとき、それは内発的動機付けにもとづく行動といわれ、活動が何か他の目的、例えば資格取得などの手段として行われているとき、それは外発的動機漬けにもとづく活動とみなされている。
　本田とSakyuは、論文内で日本人英語学習者の習熟度と、先程述べた内発的動機、外発的動機がどのように関わるのかを検証し、調査結果により、内発的、および外発的動機が学習者の習熟度に影響することがわかったと述べている。

Generally, the purpose is on activities. There are two motivations; intrinsic and extrinsic. When someone gets obvious rewards other than satisfaction, he or she does that out of intrinsic motivation. In contrary, when someone does in order to get something else, such as certification, he or she does that out of extrinsic motivation.

Honda and Sakyu examined, in their thesis paper, correlation between proficiency of Japanese English learners and intrinsic and extrinsic motivations which were mentioned above. Result found out the effects of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations on proficiency of learners.
