The interest rate environment in the third quarter put pressure on the profitability of the U.S. variable annuity industry despite a rally in the stock market, says PRU. Third-quarter U.S. sales of stock-market linked variable annuities rose 9% from the same period a year ago, to $34.9 billion.
The stock market performed well, as industry sales tend to be closely correlated with the moves in the S&P 500.A boost in the stock market is "a welcome development" as it helps reduce pressure on the profitability of variable annuities, said Pelletier. That's been particularly important because this is because the interest rate environment "has worked in the other direction"
