This relative dissatisfaction may have been one reason for their increase in neuroticism; their investment in the traditional roles of wife and mother had not paid off as convention might have promised. Helson and Srivastava(2001) showed that their three types of aging trajectories had benefits and drawbacks. In our case, we found that the authoritarian path was generally negative, although work with a larger sample including men might examine if authoritarianism interacts with variables like generativity to produce more satisfying life outcomes.
