Crowd Funding in Japan: In this series, will focus in on a couple of actual examples of crowd-funding in Japan. Crowd funding is a rapidly emerging new eco-system of funding, which brings new products, projects and events into existence using a whole new form of money supply. This international trend has reached Asia too.
先日開催されたCESで注目を集めた「HAPILABS」は食事の習慣をモニタリングすることでより健康的に食べることを後押ししてくれるフォークだ。同じフォークでも、「食事を奏でる」ことで毎日の食卓を豊かにすることを目指すのが「EaTheremin」。
At the recently held CES event, HAPILABS received some attention for their fork device, which monitored eating habits and encouraged healthy eating. Now there is another novel fork, the EaTheremin, which aims to enrich the mealtime experience by 'making music as you eat'.
フォークの持ち手と先端が別の電極になっており、食べ物を「食べる」瞬間に食材と人体 （口→持ち手）を介して微弱な電流が流れる。これにより、フォークに差した食べ物の種類や食べ方（抵抗値の変化）に応じてさまざまな音を奏でるという。ユーザは製品に乾電池を入れるだけでいい。
The handle and tip of the fork function as separate electrodes. At the moment that the diner eats, a tiny electric current flows through the food and the diner's body (i.e., their mouths and hands). Depending on the changing levels of electrical resistance that the diner's food and way of eating generate, the fork generates a number of different sounds. The user only has to put batteries into the fork.
EaThereminには2種類ある。デジタル版は、事前にメモリ内にサンプリングされた効果音を、食材の抵抗値を元に選択・再生する。食べる瞬間に歯切れ良い効果音が楽しめるのが特徴だ。アナログ版では、単純なサイン波が食材の抵抗値や食べ方によってなめらかに変化する、テルミン風サウンドを生成する。連続的に音が変化するため、より楽器的な感覚が楽しめるという。
There are two types of EaTheremin. The digital type comes with sound effect samples pre-installed, which are selected and replayed depending on the electrical resistance of the food, with the specific feature of playing a pleasant crisp sound at the moment that the diner eats. On the other hand, the analogue type produces a theremin-type sound by smoothly modulating a simple sine wave in response to the food's level of resistance. By successively modulating the sound, the diner can enjoy the feeling of playing a musical instrument.
発想と着眼点は素敵だ。例えば子どもに嫌いな食べ物を食べさせる際、もしくは認知症を煩う高齢者や患者にもう一度食を楽しんでもらうためのツールとして有効かもしれない。しかし、実際の製品ではデザインが改良されるというものの、現状のプロトタイプを見る限りあまり実用的には見えないのが残念だ。
プロジェクトは合計金額¥308,500を集めたものの成功することなく終わった。
It's wonderfully and expressive and attention-catching. For example, it could excel as tool for getting children eating foods they don't much like, or to make mealtimes enjoyable again for seniors and others with cognitive impairments. Unfortunately however, although the design of the actual product has been improved, unless a prototype can be seen, it doesn't seem very practical.
Although the project reaped a total of 308,500 Yen, the project ended without success.
