As an 18-year-old, Nishikori made a surprising run at his first US Open, defeating the No. 4 seed, David Ferrer of Spain, and making it all the way to the last 16. It was the best performance by a Japanese man in the open era. Nishikori also won his first tour title in 2008, at Delray Beach.
After his breakout season, though, Nishikori suffered a right-elbow injury that had to be surgically repaired, and he missed almost the entire 2009 campaign. It was a struggle to get back to where he was before the injury.
弱冠１８歳にして、錦織は驚嘆すべき結果を初出場のUSオープンで達成した。第４シード、スペインのダビド・フェレールを破り、ベスト１６に進出を果たしたのだ。オープン創始以来、日本人男子選手としては初の快挙である。また錦織は２００８年デルレイビーチでツアー初優勝を獲得している。
しかし知名度を得た後、錦織は右肘の負傷に苦しみ、手術／治療を受けなければならず、２００９年のツアーは殆どを欠場した。彼が負傷前のポジションを取り戻すのは困難だった。
