その同時期、谷崎潤一郎の「陰影礼賛」を読んで蛍光灯にひどく嫌悪感を感じていたり、日本の近代文化に関する光と闇の興亡にひどく敏感になっている時だったから、余計心に残るものが大きかったのかもしれない。
この作品は家全体がジェームズ・タレルによる照明のコーディネートでできているのだが、リビングフロアーの開閉式の屋根部分から四角くのぞく空を見上げることが最大のポイントである。チェックインは必ず夕焼け前までに。夕陽が沈んでから、真っ暗になるまでの約30分程度のあいだ、急激に空の色が変化していく時間に、窓の内側から照らしているオレンジ色のLEDが、空の色に対応して徐々に明るく変化してゆき、切り抜かれた空と天井の色のコントラストが最も美しくなるように設計されている。 そしてなによりこの光のプログラムは、光の館に宿泊しないと見れないのである。
そもそも日本の家屋に蛍光灯を使い始めたことは、大きな大きな間違いの始まりだったのではないかと思う。高度経済成長期「明るいナショナル」の標語にあるように、家中から、町中の明かりという明かりを、蛍光灯に取り替えてしまったことによって、本来明るく照らす必要のない所まで照らされるようになった。その結果、汚れたものまではっきり見えるようになってしまい、すぐに取り替える文化が生まれ、 消費サイクルを激しく助長するようになった。またその白い光をオフィスで煌々と照らすことにより、人間を常に活動的にさせることにもなり、全体的には大きく日本の経済発展に影響を及ぼしたが、結果的にそれは幸せなことだったんだろうか？
センスがいいのわるいのという議論を聞くたびに、センスというのは文字通り感じる力のことなのだから、センスが悪いというのは、純粋に感じる力がにぶいということなのだ。そもそも感じる力がにぶいのに、センスが良くなりたいとはどういうことだろうか。 センスが良いというのは、いいことだけとは限らない。感じすぎてしまって、それはそれで大変なことなのに。だからこそ現代社会はそうして感覚を閉ざしていないと、生きていくことができないのもまた避けがたい事実である。
光の館は、そんな現代社会を痛烈に批判するとともに、閉ざされた感覚を多少なりとも開くことができる場所である。

In the same period, I had read Junichiro Tanizaki's "In Prase of Shadows" and I felt disgust about fluorescent lights, and was very sensitive to the fate of light and shadow related to Japanese modern cultures. Maybe that was because the impact was extremely huge.

This piece uses entire house which lightings are coordinated by James Turrell. The most impressive point is to look up to the square-shaped sky which shows from the retractable roof in the living floor. Please be sure to check in before sunset. After sunset until the sky is completely dark, for approximately 30 minutes, in the time the color of sky quickly changes, orange LED lit from inside the window gradually turns bright according to the color of the sky. Clipped sky in contrast with ceiling light is designed to be most beautiful.
More than anything, you are not allowed to see this lighting program unless you stay at the house of light.

During the high economic growth period, like a catch-phrase "Bright National", all lighitings, from houses to towns, were switched to fluorescent lights. As a result, places that originally did not have to be lighted became lighted. Eventually, even stains became clearly visible, making people accustomed to immediately exchange the light,
