See Brown(1965) and Winter(1996) for comprehensive textbook summaries of half a century of work on the construct. Kotre(1999) and McAdams(2006) provided engaging summaries of research on generativity while advancing researchers' understanding of the construct in important ways. In the current study, we investigated how generativity and authoritarianism might impact the developmental process of women who are on the cusp of young-old age. Our primary goals were to extend the construct validity of these classic personality variables. We did this by extending the age range of participants typically studied when using these two variables and by examining developmental themes relevant for midlife and later midlife.
