For the visionary role Gates picked Craig Mundie, who was designated chief research and strategy officer. Hired in 1992, Mundie was originally brought in to work on non-PC computing at Microsoft. His field of expertise was supercomputers, with Gates anticipating the increasingly availability and importance of super computing power in our everyday lives.
And then there are the technical fellows, a small group of people about 20 or so strong. These people are responsible for many of the technical innovations produced by Microsoft, the employees that Gates often described as the real experts.
