Observers say that Gates was more successful than most computer companies at preserving the initial fun and excitement that made the company a buzzy place to work in the early days. 'We enjoy working together - these are smart people and we have some very hard problems to solve', he said. 'It's a competitive business, and they appreciate all the feedback I give them, including the negative feedback. We are all pretty well paid and we're all having fun - nobody cries too much.'
