Gates has said that the biggest factor affecting how fast Microsoft can grow has always been the availability of really smart people. To begin with he was able to recruit programmers he knew personally - 'smart friends' as he called them - but as time went on this supply ran out and he found himself having to take on 'smart strangers'.
