Gates' own love affair with computers began when he was at school. At that time, few schools could afford to provide their students with access to a computer, but Lakeside, the school he attended, was an exception. Gates made his first deal in the computer business at the tender age of 13 when he agreed to look for software bugs in return for free computer time.
'I was lucky enough when I was quite young to have an exposure to computers, which were very expensive and kind of limited in what they could do, but still they were fascinating', he observed.
ゲイトがコンピューターに夢中になるきっかけを作ってくれたのは学校だった。当時、殆どの学校がコンピューターを生徒の為に設けるという余裕がなかったが、ビルが通っていたLakeside校は例外だった。彼がまだほんの13歳の時、ソフトのバグを見つける換わりに、自由にコンピューターを使えさせてもらうというのが、彼のコンピューター事業における最初の取引だった。
「私は、幸運にもかなり小さい時に、コンピュータに触れる機会があった。でも当時のコンピューターは、高価な上、出来ることといったら限られていた。でもそれでも私を夢中にさせた。」と、当時を振り返った。
