Japan’s GMO Payment Gateway deepens alliance with Neweb through $1M investment
Today GMO Payment Gateway, an online payment subsidiary of Japan’s GMO Internet, announced that it has doubled-down on its alliance with Taiwan’s Neweb online payment service, investing a further US$1 million into the partnership that began last year. GMO says that the expanded investment will be used to build out the company’s presence in East Asia and introduce Neweb to Japan.

日本のGMOインターネットの子会社で、オンライン決済サービス事業を営むGMOペイメントゲートウェイは、台湾のNewebとのパートナーシップを去年から開始しているが、さらに百万米ドルを投資して提携を強化することを今日発表した。GMOは、増えた投資資金は東アジアでの同社の存在を強化し、Newebの日本での展開に運用されるだろうと言っている。
GMO Payment Gateway first teamed up with Neweb back in 2014, but the Japanese company has been active outside of East Asia too. It has local companies in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand (as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan) that it uses to build payment solutions for Japanese ecommerce companies wishing to enter foreign markets. At the same time, its GMO Global Payment Fund – which is where today’s US$1M investment came from – invests in local payment-related startups. The partnership and this follow-on investment in Neweb is a solid indication that GMO likes what it sees in Neweb and expects the company to be able to expand throughout the region.
GMOペイメントゲートウェイは、2014年に初めてNewebと提携を組んだが、同社は東アジア以外でも活動している。シンガポール、マレーシア、タイ（及び香港と台湾）に支社を持ち、海外進出を図る日本のeコマースに決済サービスを提供している。同時に、今日の投資の百万米ドルの出所であるGMOグローバルペイメントファンドは、地域の決済サービス関係のスタートアップに投資している。Newebとのパートナーシップと継続した投資は、GMOがNewebを高く評価し、地域全体へ進出できる能力を期待していることを強く示唆している。
This new US$1M investment is just the tip of the iceberg, though. A couple of months ago, GMO raised US$65M from multinational banking giant Mitsui Sumitomo to strengthen its GMO Payment Gateway ecommerce payment solution and aid the startups that it serves. GMO still has millions of dollars to invest in epayment companies across East and Southeast Asia, and this Neweb move may just be one among many. Thailand’s 2C2P, which GMO has invested in several times already, could also be in line for a new cash infusion for example.

だが、今回の新しい100万米ドルの投資は、氷山の一角に過ぎない。数か月前、GMOは多国籍銀行大手・三井住友銀行より6500万米ドルの出資を受け、GMOペイメントゲートウェイのeコマース決済ソリューションの強化と、同社が扱うスタートアップ各社の援助に役立てる。GMOはなおも東アジア、東南アジアのeペイメント企業各社への投資のため数百万ドルを用意しており、今回のNewebの動きは数ある動きの1つに過ぎないとみられる。タイの2C2Pも、既にGMOが数回にわたって出資を行っているが、新しい資金注入の例として挙がるだろう。
