規定要求事項（検査基準書）を満たしているかどうかを検証し、適合(良品）・不適合（不良品）を判断すること。
検査は合否の判定を伴うため欧米では、 判定の中立性を保つためその商品を供給する部門から独立した部門が行う考えがあり、 逆に日本ではその商品を供給する部門が責任を持って行う考えが普及してきた。
最近の内部告発によるクレーム隠しの問題から欧米方式の考えを取り入れる傾向にある。
