"For much of the past decade, one constant gripe within the world of documentary has been a need for more writing and better criticism about the craft of the filmmaking (as opposed to summaries of the plot or lionizations of the subject). So why have two recent, very critical op-ed pieces about The Act of Killing drawn such heat? The answer lies in both the source of the criticism and the method.

Non è certamente comune che ci sia un dibattito sui documentari, e che spesso il dibattito sia più animato tra i membri della comunità del documentario spesso menzionata: un'affiliazione alternativamente divergente e coesa di registi, programmatori, emittenti, scrittori e altre varie figure più quelli che si ritrovano in una sorta di "solidarietà di minoranza" all'interno del più grande mondo del cinema che sia percepito e reale.
