絶滅危惧種ヤクタネゴヨウの自生地としても最大の地域で、標高300メートルより上には多くのゴヨウマツが見られます。
西武林道でのお楽しみは野生のヤクザルやヤクシカとの出会い。
野生ですので、決してエサは与えないで下さいね。
ヤクザルはニホンザルの亜種でその生息数は数千頭前後と推測されています。
ニホンザルと比べて小柄で、体毛の手足が長く粗いといった特徴があります。
ヤクザルがいるとこに良く見られるのがヤクシカ。
猿が木の上で食べる木の実のおこぼれを頂いているんだとか。
In the assumed biggest region of natural habitat for the endangered Yakushima White Pine, you can see many Japanese White Pines rising more than 300 meters above sea level.
On the Seibu woodland path it is fun to meet with the wild Yakushima macaque and Yakushima sika.
The Yakushima macaque is a subspecies of the Japanese macaque and it is estimated that there are thousands living about.
Compared to the Japanese macaque, it is smaller and has longer coarser hair on its hands and feet.
If you look closely in places where you see the Yakushima macaque, you will see the Yakushima sika.
For example you might see monkeys up in the trees eating left over berries.
