水かさが多いときは全員が身を低くして狭い橋のトンネルをくぐり、ちょっとしたアドベンチャー感覚を楽しめます。
要塞としての役割だけでなく、降り過ぎた雨水を一時遊ばせて、はん濫を防いだり、農業用水や防火用水等に利用するなど、市民生活と直接にかかわる重要な役割を担ってきました。
この掘割は、先人たちが水と共生していくなかで形成された柳川市の貴重な歴史的財産でもあります。
