A rule that came to mind in 1983. Think of what you skip reading a novel: thick paragraphs of prose you can see have too many words in them. What the writer is doing, he’s writing, perpetrating hooptedoodle, perhaps taking another shot at the weather, or has gone into the character’s head, and the reader either knows what the guy’s thinking or doesn’t care. I’ll bet you don’t skip dialogue.
If it sounds like writing, rewrite it.
Or, if proper usage gets in the way, it may have to go. I can’t allow what we learned in English composition to disrupt the sound and rhythm of the narrative. It’s my attempt to remain invisible, not distract the reader from the story with obvious writing.
Uma regra que veio à mente em 1983. Pense no que você pula quando lê um romance: largos parágrafos de prosa em que você pode ver muitas palavras neles. O que o escritor está fazendo, sua escrita, perpetrando bobagens, talvez dando outra olhada no clima, ou entrando na cabeça do personagem, e o leitor ou sabe o que o cara está pensando ou não se importa. Eu aposto que você não pula diálogos.
Se soa feito escrita, reescreva.
Ou, se o uso apropriado ficar no caminho, ele pode ter que sair. Eu não posso permitir que o que aprendemos na composição do Português perturbe o som e o ritmo da narrativa. É minha tentativa de permanecer invisível, não distrair o leitor da estória com escrita óbvia.
