Octavianus now learned of the danger that had menaced him. In a moment of confidence in their new alliance, Antonius revealed the treachery of Salvidienus;who was arraigned forhigh treason before the Senate and condemned to death.This was the end of Q. Salvidienus Rufus the peer of Agrippa and Ventidius, and most remarkable, perhaps, of all the marshals of the Revolution.Like Balbus, he had held as yet no senatorial office--the wars had hardly left time for that. But Octavianus had designated him as consul for the following year. The next two eponymous consuls were a visible reminder of Caesarian loyalty--alone of the senators they had sought to defend Caesar the Dictator when he was assailed by the Liberators.
