質問についてですが、日本語は1バイトだけではなく、2バイトや3バイトの文字があります。
PHPでそのような指定はしていませんか？またはアルファベットのみの指定とか。
私はPHPは詳しくない為、検討違いな指摘をしていたらすみません。
難しい問題だと思うので解決できない場合はそれで構いません。
あとマニュアルに小さなミスがありましたのでその箇所を画像で添付します。

As for your question, some of the Japanese characters consist of 2 or 3 bites each, besides from the ones consist of 1 bite.
Does PHP specify like that? Or do they specify to use alphabets only, or whatever?
As I am not familiar with PHP, allow me if my description is a wrong guess.
Since this is a very difficult issue, it is OK if not solved.
By the way, there was a small mistake in the manual, of which a picture is attached.
