一般的に、あるいは評価者が個人的な許容範囲を超えた趣味、あるいは外見的な容貌や行動様式）をもつ人を偏見を込めて、安易に一般人がおたくと呼ぶだけであり、明確な差は存在しない。好意的に表現する際にはマニア、否定的に表現する際にはおたくという意見も見受けられる。
なお、呼称の由来として、マニアな人たちが集まって会話するときに、二人称代名詞｛「おまえ」とか「あなた」｝に「おたく」を好んで使っていたことから、とされている。
In general, people are prejudiced against those who have hobbies (or physical appearances and behavioral patterns) which exceed the normal, or their personal tolerance levels, and simply refer to them as "otaku"--there is no clear difference. It can then be inferred that when representing them in a positive light they are "enthusiast"; in a negative light, "otaku."
Further, the title is said to have originated from the fact that enthusiasts who gathered together to talk liked to use "otaku" as a second person pronoun (a group of words including "omae" and "anata").
