Spending less than $100, this small team just took an idea, built it, and got it to market. Now they know people want it, so they are continuing to focus on performance and feature improvements to satisfy a growing customer base.

If things keep working, they may be able to quit their jobs and grow this into a multimillion dollar business, but nobody’s mortgage is riding on it.

Like my grandmother in 1945, they had a hunch that people wanted SignupSumo, so they created it. Unlike my grandmother, they hardly had to risk anything to start interacting with the market.

For example Baidu Tieba, the largest Chinese-language forums, with nearly 100 million daily active users, they’ve been commenting [on Baidu Tieba] since December of 2003. Every comment that came in was indexed and searched by Baidu. A bit later on Baidu Knows, Baidu Wiki, and other services all came from this concept. We allowed our users to create portals and to create content, and then used search technology to index it. That was the biggest difference between Baidu’s approach and Google’s during Baidu’s development in the PC search era.

Helen Michels, global innovation director at the Futures Team at Diageo, said in a statement, “Mobile technology is changing the way we live, and as a consumer brands company we want to embrace its power to deliver amazing new consumer experiences in the future.”

She added, “It sets the bar for technology innovation in the drinks industry.”

Diageo Technology Ventures was set up in September to help solve the company’s business challenges and unlock growth opportunities. The project takes advantage of advancements in sensors, electronic printing, material sciences, and mobile technologies. Diageo owns brands such as Crown Royal and Tanqueray, and it is traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

Zeemaps is a dead simple, free-to-start service that allows you to upload a spreadsheet of locations and instantly create a custom map that you can share with your sales group. It allows you to add colored markers, so you can indicate whether a location is a prospect, customer, or competitor, and to add custom fields, such as phone number and website, as well as the ability to shade regions to mark off territories.

It also supports a zooming feature where if you click on a location, the number of locations that’s shown as a single number expands into a list of the actual map points.No more flipping back and forth between several different maps, and doing lots of Google map searches while talking to prospects.

1. Increase internet access

In Southeast Asia, the share of internet users varies by country. In Indonesia, only around 16 percent of the population (39 million) use the internet. Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam also have penetration rates of less than 50 percent. Singapore and Malaysia, however, have rates that surpass two thirds of the population, bringing them close to “advanced internet economies.” In five out of the six countries, 60 to 80 percent of the people who are online also shop online. Indonesia is the exception, however, as only 12 percent of its users have shopped online to date.

In Estonia, it takes voters less than a few minutes to vote for president on their mobile phones. The technology for super-quick electronic voting exists, but its available in only a few countries around in the world.

Estonia’s Prime Minister explained in a YouTube video how easy it is to vote:

Estonia held a round of voting this week, and happy citizens were tweeting how proud they were of the country’s technologically forward-thinking government.

The reason why America hasn’t adopted online voting remains complicated. The simplest explanation is that American elections would be a much (much) bigger target for hackers, so the security protocols have to be more stringent.

Also, Estonia has been willing to use a national identity system, which helps citizens do more things online, from banking to voting. National IDs are politically contentious in the U.S., with critics and civil libertarians worried about the potential privacy implications and the potentially bloated bureaucracy necessary to maintain it.

False positives occur when an antivirus program marks a legitimate file as malware. When one flags a key operating system, this can lead to computers locking up, crashing, or even failing to boot up. Google lists in more detail what false positives can lead to:

・Software developers may face strong business impact as a large portion of their users see their programs rendered unusable.

・Support teams for the affected programs may be suddenly overwhelmed by user emails claiming that the given software is not working correctly.

・End-users may be unable to interact with important software and see themselves unable to finish critical tasks.

・Antivirus vendors’ reputation may be severely hindered.

ウイルス対策プログラムが、問題のないファイルを有害ソフトだと判断してしまう時に偽陽性が起きる。これがメインのOSで起こってしまうと、PCが固まったり、クラッシュしたり、最悪の場合は起動しなくなってしまう。Googleによると、偽陽性によって起こりうることは下記の通りである:

In other words, Microsoft was more than eager to help fight false positives, which often lead to antivirus and other security software attacking Windows files rather than malware. Now, VirusTotal will mark safe files at the top of its reports.

Here is an example (notice the green background, smiley face, and “Trusted source!” label):

The goal is for the antivirus vendor to correct the false positive before it can cause any (or further) damage. Mistaken detections are also dropped from the positives count and degraded to the bottom of the report. This ensures false positives do not mislead users looking at the report.

False positives hurt not just the antivirus industry but the software industry in general, and they are difficult to avoid because antivirus vendors are increasingly required to be more proactive via technologies such as generic signatures and heuristic flags. This is a great initiative on Google’s part, and one it’s looking to expand to other large software development companies.

Since Google’s acquisition, VirusTotal has also released an OS X client. Apple would be the next logical tech giant for VirusTotal to work with, but given its track record, we’re not holding our breath.

This kind of personalization is common on many websites. But not so in mobile apps, where links like this often merely take you to the start screen of the app, or maybe to a page for the Warriors game — not a shopping cart filled out with the order you specifically would want. So today Kahuna is taking a step toward changing that with its release of Dynamic Deep Linking.

Links deep inside apps don’t work like Web links in websites, since there isn’t an HTML standard for apps. In recent years, mobile deep linking has enabled a link within an app or a website to go inside another app and land on a specific screen, instead of just opening the app and showing its home screen.

But that link is specific to the content — the hotel — and not the person. Everyone who clicked on that mobile ad for Hilton Hotels would see the same Hilton Hotels screen in an installed travel app.

Kahuna is taking this one step further, by enabling links for apps to utilize the personal history of the person clicking the link. So a specific customer, for instance, might be taken from a link in a push notification about Hilton Hotels to the Preferred Guest page for Hilton Hotels in her travel app, because of her good history with the American Express card.

“It was natural for us because our core service is a platform for sharing and because we already had a threat analysis framework called ThreatData that we could build upon,” Mark Hammell, manager of Facebook’s Threat Infrastructure team, said in a statement. “Our goal is that organizations anywhere will be able to use ThreatExchange to share threat information more easily, learn from each other’s discoveries, and make their own systems safer.”

While highly targeted attacks are on the rise, many threats go after multiple targets. As a result, one successful attack often results in a flurry of similar attacks performed elsewhere.

Facebook’s argument is that existing tools for sharing security information between organizations are inefficient, complex, and frankly a burden:

Email and spreadsheets are ad-hoc and inconsistent. It’s difficult to verify threats, to standardize formats, and for each company to protect its sensitive data. Commercial options can be expensive, and many open standards require additional infrastructure.

Many teams end up tackling the same problems that others have already solved. ThreatExchange aims to help companies secure their systems by letting them learn from each other’s discoveries.

The ThreatExchange landing page states: “That’s the beauty of working together on security. When one company gets stronger, so do the rest of us.”

We couldn’t agree more. When it comes to security, collaboration is much more important than competition.

No financial details have been revealed for the acquisitions. Here’s all of them:

・Just Eat in India – This deal pertains only to the Indian segment of UK-based Just Eat. Along with Foodpanda’s recent TastyKhana buy-up, Foodpanda now claims to cover over 200 Indian cities and 12,000 restaurants. This gives the Rocket company a strong hold of the Indian market.
・EatOye in Pakistan – This startup came into life this time last year. It covers 1,000 partner restaurants in 15 cities.
・Food Runner in Malaysia and Singapore – This is the food delivery subsidiary of Singapore-based DealGuru. The acquisition also includes sister site Room Service.

This week I’ve noticed that the indoor pollution level tends to be just under half of what it is outside. So if it’s really bad out there, the air in your home is awful as well. Today, for example, it’s 110 out there (categorized as “unhealthy for sensitive groups”) on a scale that goes up to 500, but inside it’s 47 (“good”). Turning on the Mi Air Purifier quickly brings the PM2.5 level down even further, and it’s below 20 in less than 30 minutes.

The built-in pollution read-out in the Mi Air Purifier responds quickly. Moving the unit to another room causes the number shown in the app to rise as it detects dirtier air.
