What ultimately caused them to fold was a confluence of factors: The incompatibility between their business model and the Asian market, a weak US venture capital climate after the European Crisis, and the acquisition offers which they felt did their stakeholders (and themselves) injustice.

SGE: Did you try to court acquirers and what’s the process?

My February trip was to do that. We had a few from the US, Singapore, and Malaysia, they’re distinct group of companies. One was an acq-hire.

The challenge we faced was in one situation the investors lose and we win and get employed, but then investors doesn’t get value. Or, investors get a payout and we get into an unfavorable position. These were stark choices we were facing.

Somebody had to sacrifice, and that didn’t make any sense. Then comes the question of: Why do the worst thing and nobody wins? But then you don’t want to have resentment in relationships where you sacrifice the other group.

SGE: How did you decide when was the point you would quit?

It was after the Christmas break in 2011. Part of the reason was the European crisis, which really hampered a lot of what we wanted to do, in terms of venture capital funding. Things changed. Last quarter, investments from VCs went down 45%.

It did not necessarily impact us directly, but there were ramifications from that side of things. It’s not the Asian investors that were affected, but the US investors. We had enough money, we had even enough sales right now that are booked. About 30 percent of what investments we took in, that’s the size of money we’re letting go.

SGE：閉鎖の時期をいかにして決断したのか？

SGE: So, what about Asia? What did you feel about the market and environment there?

Let me ask you a question, in the next few years, will a Facebook and Instagram come out of Asia? My view is that there isn’t an ecosystem conducive enough for guys to work hard for your company without revenue. Facebook didn’t have revenue for a long time. Instagram did not.

I would suspect that — now with all the buzz about Rocket Internet right now — if the CEOs from the Samwer brothers’ companies just ran with the idea and business model behind it themselves, which is basically pumping in lots of money, getting the hockey stick, and scaling aggressively, I’m not sure how much money they would have raised on their own accord.

E-commerce took off in the US but not among smaller mum-and-pop stores here. We found a very strange thing about how people behave in the Asian market. It’s not the value proposition we provide but the behavior. People here are not that ready to take a step onto the Internet.

Our initial thesis was: We want to help small businesses? It is very tough. We were hoping that if we give it out for free, in a freemium model, they would come and try out the service.

But anytime we did a marketing or news media push, here’s the difference we saw: With the lead generation we got from public relations, people in Asia would call us or email and we have to support them manually. From there we have to do sales calls otherwise there’ll be a steep drop off and they won’t try out the service. How you do sales call and handholding support for a free product?

In the US, by doing one article we were getting 20 or 30 people coming online to try us out from across the US. People in the US understood it, people here don’t.

The US market was also more sophisticated. We had different copies for both US and Singapore sites. Here, our site used simpler English. Otherwise the mum-and-pop stores wouldn’t get what we were doing.

Playmoolah is top startup for Innotribe Challenge in Singapore

Playmoolah, a startup that has developed a money management game for children that ties them to real life and real money, has won the “Top Startup” title at the Innotribe Challenge showcase held in Singapore on 24th April, Tuesday.

The company will now advance to the Innotribe Startup Challenge finals in Osaka, Japan in October 2012 where it will compete for the US$50,000 prize. The Challenge is part of Sibos, the annual conference of global financial organization SWIFT.

After winning the challenge, the founders were shuttled to the Innotribe Bangkok event held at the Asian Banker Summit this week.

当企業はこの後、日本は大阪で2012年10月に開催されるInnotribute Startup Challengeの決勝に進み、5万米ドルの賞金をかけて戦いに挑む。このチャレンジは、世界的な金融機関SWIFTによる年次コンフェランスSibosの一環である。

このチャレンジに優勝した企業の創始者は、その後、今週のAsian Banker Summitにて開催されるInnotribe Bangkokに向けて飛び立つ。

“We’re very humbled by the audiences’ overwhelming reaction, proving that now more than ever, people are starting to rethink the purpose of banks and the need for effective financial education across the world,” says Lee Min Xuan, co-founder of PlayMoolah.

“We hope to partner with many more schools, organisations and banks to bring fun financial education to more children and their families.”

Playmoolah is no stranger to the startup scene in Singapore. They won the Echelon 2011 Launchpad, a regional startup competition that saw six companies pitch to an audience of investors and entrepreneurs.

And just recently, on 18th April, they officially launched their game after months of beta testing.

Game Ventures’ Howzat Hits 1 Million Active Gamers, Shares Some Secret Sauce

Today Zaki Mahomed, founder of Game Ventures, shared a graph on his Facebook showing that Howzat, a Facebook Cricket sport game, had crossed the one million active users mark. The screenshot graph shows a linear increment in monthly active users. It’s good growth to have as an entrepreneur, so I asked Zaki what’s the secret behind it. He didn’t hesitate to reply, saying,

We take user actions seriously. Understanding the levers of your product and then building for retention. It’s not easy so most people don’t like it.

But that didn’t explain too much. I was curious to understand how exactly he did it. I believe most entrepreneurs would want to know, so I pressed for examples.

Zaki says that the multiplayer mode for Howzat is very popular. It is a game mode where four gamers can play together and compare scores in real-time. But for obvious reasons, it sucks to be a loser. So usually, half way through the game, the bottom two guys who are getting whipped badly have little chance to recover which makes quitting common. And that isn’t too good for the game. To cater to the user behavior, Zaki and co designed a new multiplayer mode which automatically knocks out the lowest player every three minutes or so. It makes the game more competitive which he says leads to gamer retention.

And just last week, Howzat saw a four percent drop in new user growth. The team pinpointed the problem to a new video ad campaign which they ran on Howzat. Every Howzat gamer, new or regular, would see that video ad. The new players who aren’t impressed usually opted to quit the game. So currently, advertisements are only shown to regular gamers who are already hooked in. New gamers won’t be able to see the ad until they become regulars. Zaki shared more info about his own operation at Game Ventures:

Retention is everything. Identify 10, 20, 30 levers for your app and
track them obsessively. Track them when you ship product, track them daily, and make someone own each of them. Internally, we have maybe 15 metrics we track and they are divided between three or four people.

We also briefly chatted about Game Ventures’ future plan. Zaki told me that Howzat will be available on mobile and tablet soon and is shifting its focus from Facebook to a more multi-platform approach. While the game commands over a million active users, monetizing it is still a challenge, especially for a live action game like Howzat.

New China 3G User Stats Suggest China Unicom Might Dominate By Next Year

New 3G subscriber stats for China’s two largest mobile carriers show that China Unicom (NYSE:CHU; HKG:0762) is still making good progress, hitting a new milestone in its pursuit of China Mobile (NYSE:CHL; HKG:0941), the world’s biggest telco by user numbers. For the first time ever, China Unicom’s number of 3G users is now well past 80 percent of China Mobile’s 3G subscriber base [1], and is closing in at a rate that suggests that the smaller rival might surpass China Mobile in terms of 3G by 2013 Q1.

New stats for the end of March (2012 Q1) show that China Unicom’s 3G (WDCMA) smartphone subs amounted to 48.86 million, out of 160.63 million total GSM mobile users. China Mobile, meanwhile, rocked up to 59.56 million on 3G (TD-SCMA) from a whopping 667.2 million on its entire network. Historically, China Mobile has been hobbled by its localized TD-SCDMA data network, which doesn’t work with most global phones or tablets. China Unicom, in contrast, can be used with any global WCDMA phone, such as the popular models like the Samsung Galaxy S and SII and is the first to get Apple’s iPhone and iPad in China (with it coming later to China Telecom (NYSE:CHA; HKG:0728) for its CDMA network).

In total, China has just over a billion mobile users by now.

Here’s an interactive graph showing the 3G user-ship of Unicom relative to China Mobile; note the fast-shrinking proportional gap between the two rivals:

Ideosource Invests in Singaporean Edutainment Startup

Jakarta-based incubator IdeoSource has made an investment in Kark Mobile Education, a Singaporean startup whose “edutainment” tablet platform has yet to even launch.

The startup’s product, which will also be called Kark, will use interactive elements to help children aged four to twelve learn with its apps. The backing comes as Kark comes close to completing the JFDI–Innov8 2012 Bootcamp, a 100-day long program that propells fifty entrepreneurs from ideas to inception and investment. It hasn’t been made known how much Ideosource is ploughing into the startup, but it comes on top of the “S$15,000 investment for a negotiable equity stake” that comes from the intense JFDI and SingTel Innov8 course. Kark – and the other bootcampers – still have the chance to pitch to a room of investors on May 4th.
