What is Sequoia India Doing in Singapore? An Interview with Shailendra Jit Singh

Shailendra Jit Singh is the managing director of Sequoia Capital India. That’s the sort of investment firm that entrepreneurs dream about. So what is Sequoia India doing in Singapore, and in Southeast Asia in general? We talked to Shailendra on the floor of our Startups in Asia (Singapore) event to hear more about Sequoia’s experience and its plans for the region.

シャイレンドラ・ジット・シンはセコイア・インディアの最高経営責任者である。セコイア・インディアはまさに起業家達の憧れの的となるような投資会社である。そこでセコイア・インディアがシンガポールや東南アジア諸国で何を実際に何をおこなっているのか？セコイアのこれまでの投資経験とそれら地域に向けた事業計画についてたずねるために、われわれスタートアップスのアジア（シンガポール）局内でシャイレンドラに話を聞いてみた。

What are you thinking in terms of expansion into Southeast Asia?

That’s exactly the question I was anticipating – why are we here? In the last year, we have made four or five investments in companies that are headquartered here [in Southeast Asia] and have operations at least in India, perhaps the majority of the operations in India, but they increasingly have a value proposition and a footprint in more countries in Southeast Asia. We have currently maybe half a dozen companies doing business in Southeast Asia actively and we see many more of those.

When things get done more quickly and more efficiently, you have time to plan new activities that will enhance the productivity of your area.
So, when you are faced with getting a job done, give your employees the chance to do it their way within the boundaries that you set for them. They will make mistakes, but that is OK. Mistakes can be fixed, and people learn a lot more when they have the chance to make mistakes that are theirs, not their boss's. Empowered people are motivated and productive people.

業務がより早く、より効率的に遂行されると、自分の仕事の生産性をより高めるような活動を計画する時間が生まれることになる。従って、任務が首尾よく完了したら、、自分の部下達にここまではやっていいと決めておいた範囲において自分達のやり方で業務を遂行するチャンスを与えてあげればよい。彼らは間違いを犯すかもしれないが、それは問題のないことだ。そんな間違いは修正可能なものだし、自分の上司のせいではない、自分自身のせいでミスを犯すようになると、人はより多くのことを学べるものなのだ。より多くの権限を与えられた者はよりモチベーションの高い、生産性の高い人間になれるのである。

CHAPTER 45-1
As a general rule, to motivate employees to take more responsibility for their work, empower them. Give them the power to do their jobs as they see fit within the boundaries you set for them. Once you have trained your employees about a job and how it fits into the bigger picture, and you
have helped them understand the values that you hold for getting a job done, give them the authority and the responsibility to get it done as best they can.

More than one way
Many bosses want things done only the way that they would do them. Of course, that is always the prerogative of a boss.

原則として、部下が自分の仕事により多くの責任感を持たせるようにするには、権限を与えてあげることだ。部下のためにあなたが予め引いておいた境界線に収まると思えるような範囲の仕事をする権限を与えてやることだ。もし、部下に一つの仕事を教え込み、それがどのように業務の全体像につながっているのかを理解させ、さらにはその仕事を首尾よく完了した際に抱く価値観を理解させたなら、次に部下にはできる限り多くの権限と責任を与えてあげることだ。

やり方は一つだけじゃない
ほとんどの上司というものが、自分が部下にやって欲しいやり方だけで業務が達成されることを望んでいる。もちろん、それは常に上司の特権ではある。

CHAPTER 40-5
Regular meetings keep everyone informed about how things are going and let employees. know that they are responsible for their own work behavior. They stay focused. And you have the chance to praise their work if they are completing the tasks you have asked them to complete.
Employees live with some degree of uncertainty that they are not performing something correctly. Regular evaluation allows them the freedom to know how they are doing and to go on with the encouragement of their supervisor.

絶えず打ち合わせをかさねることで、従業員は業務全体が今、どのように進捗しているのか、また自分自身の仕事をちゃんとまっとうしているかがわかるのです。　つまり彼らは常に注視されているということなのです。さらにはあなたが依頼した仕事を彼らがちゃんとこなしているならば、その仕事ぶりを褒めてあげるという機会も得られます。従業員は自分の業務を部分的には正確にこなしていないかもしれないという不安をある程度はもっているものなのです。彼らを定期的に評価してあげることで、自分達の業務の進捗具合がわかるだけでなく、上司から絶えず励まされることになるのです。
