7. PIRKA by PIRKA <chosen as a finalist>

PIRKA is a smartphone app that encourages users to clean up their environment and share the experiences of picking up trash on the road. When you pick up some trash, just take a picture of it with the app and share where and what you did with other users. Every time the other users praise your behavior, you will be encouraged to clean up more, and the world is much cleaner. Both iPhone and Android apps are available.

7. PIRKA by PIRKA　（決勝出場）

PIRKAはスマートフォンアプリで、ユーザーが環境を奇麗にしたり、道でゴミを拾うことを勧めるアプリである。ゴミを拾った場合、アプリを使って写真をとり、他のユーザーとシェアする。他のユーザーから褒められた場合、さらにやる気がでて、世界はもっと奇麗になる。iPhone とAndroidに対応している。

From a corporate social responsibility (CSR) point of view, if any company sponsors a geographical area it can then give rewards to the users who have picked trash there. Rewards could be free or discount coupons for drinks served at a local coffee shop for example.

The app was named after the Ainu language word (etupirka) given to tufted puffin which is known for grooming often and keeping themselves clean at at all times.

企業の社会的責任（CSR）の視点からすると、地域をスポンサーする企業があれば、ユーザーがゴミを拾ったことに対し報酬を与えることもできるのだ。報酬は、地元の喫茶店で使える無料かディスカウントの飲み物クーポン券などが考えられる。

このアプリはアイヌ語の常に毛繕いをし、奇麗に保っていると言われるエトピリカの名から取られた。

8. Synclogue by Joho Planet <chosen as a finalist>

If you use multiple computers (such as a laptop, a desktop at home, and a desktop PC at office) Synclogue helps you synchronize the configuration of plug-ins for apps you’ve specified. The start-up adopts a freemium model, where users are allowed to choose up to three apps to be synchorized for free. Synclogue expects the app be as essential to PC users as DropBox.

The start-up was founded by students from Waseda University and Tsukuba University.

12. 5 Seconds by Miew

Convinced that the last five seconds of amateur videos are the most entertaining, this Tokyo-based start-up launched a smartphone-based video sharing app called 5 seconds last April. It can be considered as a video version of Instagram, allowing users to take a video, add effects, share to Facebook and Twitter. The start-up expects to have 3 million users by the end of FY2011.

6 Start-ups Chosen As Finalists For SF New Tech Japan Night

On Saturday at Microsoft’s Japan office in Tokyo, there was a finalist selection event for the upcoming SF New Tech Japan Night. The event will spotlight the talent of Japan’s emerging tech start-ups to potential investors and the tech community in the San Francisco Bay Area. The event is sponsored by SF-based web consultancy Btrax, Inc and its coming event is scheduled to take place in San Francisco on November 3. (Live streaming is also planned.)

SF New Tech Japan Nightにおいて６企業が最終選考に選ばれる

土曜日、マイクロソフトに東京本社で、SF New Tech Japan Nightのイベントに向け、最終選考が行われた。このイベントは日本における将来の投資家とSan Francisco Bay Areaにおけるテクノロジーコミュニティーにおいて台頭してきている二才能ある日本企業にスポットライトをあてるものである。このイベントはSFベースのオンラインコンサルタント企業Btrax, Incがスポンサーし、次のイベントはサンフランシスコで１１月３日に開催される予定である。（ライブストリームも予定されている）

The preliminary selection event started with a keynote speech by Brandon Hill, who is a Japanese-American born on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido. He is the founder/CEO of btrax, and he has argued that Japanese start-ups need to appeal not only to the local community in Japan, but to global community as well.

Twelve start-ups were nominated, and six of them were chosen by juries as finalists to present in front of several hundreds of tech geeks in the capital of digital innovation next month.

Here are the twelve start-ups as well as some of comments from the juries and the audience. All the pitches were made in English, and the event was emceed by PO contributor Yukari Mitsuhashi.

予選は日系アメリカ人で北海道で産まれたブランドン・ヒル氏による基調講演から始まった。彼はbtraxの最高経営責任者兼創立者で、講演では、日本の新キッジ業は国内だけではなく、世界中にアピールすべきだと主張した。

１２社がノミネートされ、６社が来月デジタル革命の地で、何百人のもテクノロジーマニアを前にプレゼンするために、最終選考に残った。

ここで１２社と、審査員と観客のコメントをご紹介する。全てのプレゼンは英語でなされ、司会はPO貢献者三橋ゆか里によるものである。

1. Balloon by Nagisa, Inc.

This start-up aims to develop a new promotional media platform bridging advertisers and consumers. Balloon is a smartphone app that combines three functions: free group chat, free group calling, and photo sharing with effects.

They fundraised from Tokyo-based incubators NetAge and Samurai Incubate.

2. Bookpic by Bijutsu Shuppan Networks

The company is a subsidiary of a 100-year-old art book publisher. They introduced Bookpic, an e-publication viewer that allows users to share your comments on what you’re reading with others via Facebook and Twitter.

Brandon pointed out (as a jury member) that there are many competitors in this area and encouraged the presenter to check out Copia as an example, which is an e-book reader aimed at sharing book reading experiences and building a community online.

2. Bookpic by Bijutsu Shuppan Networks

この企業は創立１００年のアート出版社の子会社である。Bookpicを電子出版観覧用に紹介し、ユーザーが読んでいる本に関してフェイスブックやツイッターを通しコメントをシェアできる機能を備えている。

ブランドンは審査員として、この分野には競争相手が多く、例として読書体験をシェアし、コミュニティーをオンライン上で作るCopiaと比べるよう指摘した。

3. Conyac by Anydoor

Conyac is a crowdsource translation platform that allows you to ask others to translate your text to the other languages.. When a potential translator signs up with the service, he or she will be qualified by confirming if he or she can really understand an originated language by using the CAPTCHA-like technology. Multiple translators will submit their translations, and the user is allowed to pick the best. This works as a qualification process and contributes to refining the result. That’s why the service is drastically cheaper than professional translators or translation agencies, the start-up’s CEO/co-founder Naoki Yamada says.

3. Conyac by Anydoor

コニャックは翻訳プラットフォームで、他人に文章の翻訳を頼むことができる。潜在的な翻訳家が入会した場合、本当に原文が理解出来るか確かめる為、CAPTCHAのようなテクノロジーを使う。数人の翻訳家が翻訳を提出し、ユーザーは一番良い訳を選ぶことができる。これは資格を与えるプロセスと結果を洗練するのに役立つ。それがこのサービスが他のプロ翻訳家やエージェントよりかなり安い理由である、と最高責任者兼創立者の山田なおきは言う。

4. Facematch by Facematch <chosen as a finalist>

This web app was developed at Breakthrough Camp, a two-month-long camp for university/college students to launch their tech start-ups on summer vacation. It won the first prize among 24 teams.

The idea of the app is very simple. You might see a cute girl or a good-looking guy at a party but miss the chance to talk with them. It’s possible that he or she could be a friend of a friend on Facebook.

4. Facematch by Facematch （決勝出場）

このオンラインアプリはBreakthrough Campで開発された。それは大学生による、自分たちのテクノロジー会社を立ち上げる、夏休み中の２ヶ月間のキャンプで行われた。２４チームで一等を取った。

このアプリのアイディアはシンプルである。可愛い女の子やカッコいい男の子をパーティーで見かけるが、声をかけるチャンスがなかった。フェイスブックで、友達の友達である可能性がある。

The app helps you try to connect with people of similar interest by using the Facebook Friend API. You can try to find out which friend’s friend he or she is with the app, and try to connect with him or her. If both sides mutually approve, the connection request will be approved. Additionally, the app is expected to present a selection of discount coupons from restaurants and various merchandise.

このアプリはフェイスブックの友達検索を使って、同様の趣味を持つ人とつながる手助けをする。このアプリを使って、どの友達の友達なのか探し出すことができ、気になった人と連絡を取ることができる。もし双方が同意すれば、リクエストは認められる。また、このアプリはレストランや他の店からのディスカウント情報もひ表示する。

5. Grow! by Grow! <chosen as a finalist>

Grow is a platform that allows blog readers to submit tips to blog publishers. It works like Twitter’s retweet button or Facebook’s Like button embedded in a blog post, but by clicking on the Grow! button, you can tip the blog author.

Users of the service can sign up with their PayPal accounts and charge up with the reward points for their Grow! accounts beforehand. Publishers or blog authors who have received points can exchange them for real money at a rate of 1 US dollar for 100 Grow! points.

Growはブログの読者が書き手にヒントを送る機能を持つ。ブログの投稿に組み入れられツイッターのリツイートやフェイスブックの「イイネ」ボタンのように働くが、Growボタンをクリックすることで、ブログの書き手にヒントを送ることができる。

ユーザーはペイパルのアカウントを使って入会でき、謝礼金を事前にGrowのアカウントに追加する。ポイントを受け取った出版社やブログの作者は、１００Growポイントにつき１ドルに換金できる。

Three Significant Reasons Why the Indian Start-up Scene Sucks

Vineet is the founder and CEO of Teliportme, the India-based start-up behind the 360 app for Android that we reviewed last month. This is his first guest post. He’ll follow this up with three posts detailing the main issues. You can follow him on Twitter.

A lot has been written by pundits on how India is a great place for technology start-ups. I have to agree and disagree at the same time. While India is a great place to start companies that sell products (though mostly lower-end gadgets and items), it’s not too hot in terms of fostering technology innovation and taking big risks.

インドの新規事業立ち上げが上手く行かない３つの理由

VineetはTeliportmeの最高経営責任者兼創立者である。Teliportmeはインド本社の、先月我々がリビューしたAndroid向けのアプリを３６０本作成した会社である。これはVineetにとっては初の特別な役目であった。彼は本業とともに他の３つの役職とともにこれをフォローアップする。ツイッターで追跡可能だ。

インドがテクノロジーの新規企業立ち上げにいかに適した場所かに関しては、多くの批評がなされている。私はその意見に賛成でも不賛成でもある。インドが事業を始めて商品を売る（商品の質は大抵よくないが）のに適した場所である一方、テクノロジー改革とリスクを請け負うには適した場所ではないのだ。

I can sit and argue on the exact definition of the terms technology innovation and big risks – but I won’t get into all that. Instead I’ll state the fact that the most “hot” company in India right now is someone like Snapdeal, or Flipkart – which are more like business innovations than new technology.

Why is this happening? I’d identify three issues for start-ups in India. The two biggest problems that we entrepreneurs face here are access to mentors, and capital; an additional one is poor PR.

テクノロジー改革と大きなリスクの定義について議論をすることもできるが、今は控えておく。その代わり、インドで現在最も「熱い」企業と言われているのはSnapdealやFlipkartである事実を述べたいと思う。それらはどちらかと言えば、新しいテクノロジーよりビジネス改革なのだ。

何故この事態が起きているのだろうか。インドで新規企業を立ち上げるにおいて、３つの重要点がある。我々事業家が面する２つの重要な問題は、指南役と投資にアクセスすることである。追加として、貧弱なPRがある。

1. Bad Mentors

I have met a lot of famous and true entrepreneurs who have built multimillion dollar companies; but none are in the Internet space. The ones who pose as mentors in this web industry just don’t get it. True story: one certain mentor from a very famous mentoring organization actually told me that, “Any business that doesn’t make money on the first day is not a business.” Imagine if Google had gotten his advice! He also happens to be an early stage VC.

１。悪い指導

私は何億ドルにも匹敵する企業を立ち上げた有名で本物の企業家に沢山出会った。しかし誰もネット上には存在しない。オンライン上で指導に徹しようとする人は理解していないのだ。本当の話だが、非常に有名な社内教育会社のある指導者が言うには「初日に売上をあげない会社は仕事をしていない」Googleが彼のアドバイスを受けたと想像してみるといい。彼はまた偶然、VCの早期段階にいたのだ。

2. Lack of Capital

Getting access to capital is another story. The so-called best VC firms here in India will straight up ask for 35 to 40 percent of your company irrespective of your progress or the amount invested. I once asked a VC what he would bring to the table if I let him invest in the company, and he had nothing to tell me. Indeed, he seemed actually offended by that question. I am not saying that all entrepreneurs need to be funded; some can self-finance, while there is also a lot of crap out there.

２。資本不足

資本金を調達するのは別の話だ。インドにおけるいわゆる良いベンチャーキャピタル企業は、成長や費やされた資金に関係なく、３５−４０％を頼んでくる。一度ベンチャーキャピタル企業に、もし資金提供したら一体何をもたらしてくれるか聞いた所、何も言えなかったことがある。その代わり、彼はその質問に憤慨したかのように見えた。全企業が資金をえるべきだとは言っていない。自社で資金的教できる場合もあれば、そのような役立たずも多くいるわけだ。

But then the VCs are not getting paid to sit on their asses. Indian VC’s have not gone through their first cycle of VC exits so it will be interesting to see how these funds have fared in the past couple of years. In general, though, I am pretty sure all VCs will blame the entrepreneurs and vice versa.

しかしベンチャーキャピタル企業は何もせずに資金を得られる訳が無い。インドのベンチャーキャピタルは、未だベンチャーキャピタルの最初の出口に達していない。過去数年のそれらの資金がどうなったのか見るのが楽しみでもある。一般的に、ベンチャーキャピタル企業は起業家を攻め、またその逆も起こると私は確信しているのだが。
