But in the end the hands-on engagement and strategic connections that our new shareholders bring, particularly to enterprise partners, made those factors even more valuable as we scale up rapidly.”

The service for NRIs (Non Residential Indians) helps them book and pay for health checkups on behalf of their families, and receive feedback directly from the doctor.

The seed fund will be used to expand the website’s team of six to 16 across its offices in India and Singapore. There are plans to also introduce the platform to more cities across Asia.

Co-founded by Abhinav Krishna, OurHealthMate was incubated at JFDI Asia’s accelerator program in 2013. Prior to JFDI, the website was a part of Startup Chile, an accelerator funded by the Chilean government.

New app wants you to see the big picture, brings Instagram to iPad

Instagram is big in Asia. It’s even bigger in Thailand. The number one most Instagrammed spot in the world is Siam Paragon mall in Bangkok. However, Instagram has no dedicated iPad app despite the fact that many people enjoy skimming photos on their tablet. Seeing this as an opportunity, a startup based in Bangkok has launched Flow for Instagram today.

Flow for Instagram wants to fill the space left by Instagram’s absence on the iPad. It’s not the first attempt, of course, as it’s quite similar to Instaflow or Padgram.
Although Instagram does not allow uploading photos via third-party apps, it’s still possible to view photos and interact with them. Flow for Instagram allows users to look at images, like images, add comments, and stream Instagram videos on the larger iPad screen

The startup hopes it can hit one million users by the end of Q1 2014. Since Instagram is quite popular, the team believes there is a clear need for a good iPad app. Its goal is be the app people see when they search “Instagram” in the app store on an iPad.

In the future, when the app gets enough users, it will consider adding some premium features such as account switching.

The app is designed for iOS 7 but it works for those on iOS 6. It’s now available for free on the iOS App Store.

Do we really need the bigger picture?

The Flow for Instagram team believes in enhancing an app’s overall browsing experience. Flow for Instagram’s main difference from the official Instagram app is that it lets users see a dozen photos at a time without any other distractions. Comments and profile pics are removed from the main feed, reducing clutter and drawing attention to the visuals.

The team wanted to build an app that felt like it could be comparable to the official Instagram app in terms of quality. In pursuit of this goal, they spent time making sure things were smooth and that photos and videos loaded as fast as possible.

The app also features some exclusive content, such as charts tracking popular users and tagged shops in a large list of countries. Hubbard says features have been popular among Thai users during tests.

Last November Xiaomi sold 150,000 smartphones in less than 10 minutes on Chinese messaging app WeChat.

The emergence of these m-commerce flash sales is but one example of how messaging apps are becoming useful platforms for businesses to reach consumers.

Bigcolors plans to launch in Singapore this week, with Thailand, Australia, Japan and Taiwan to follow in Q1 2014. It will launch in mainland China in Q2 2014. “In 2014 we are focused on Asia Pacific, and will use 2015 to expand to other regions such as Americas and the Middle East”, shares James.

Fan is a bio nerd. In particular, he’s fascinated by the micro living organisms called cells that combine to form even more intricate living things. Referring to them as if they were human beings (“They eat and shit in the petri-dish at the same time”, he told Tech in Asia in a one-to-one interview), he explained how their sociable nature is key to understanding the potential impact of bio 3D printers.

Business model

Bio3D’s first commercial model can blood vessel cells, but it will be years before it can print full organs and really disrupt an industry. The printer sells for hundreds of thousands of dollars a pop and includes after-sales service.

Fan hopes to shift five units next year, and the company is already in sales talks with potential customers. Research institutions, universities, and drug companies are some organizations that would be interested in the printer.

The judges were concerned about how Bio3D can distinguish itself from competitors and win the market. Jimmy Rim of K-Cube Ventures asked whether 3D printing companies can easily replicate the technology. Fan responded by saying that printing living cells is vastly different from laying down plastic. The precision needed to print cells is also on a much more different scale.

Fan noted that the company’s business model is uniquely focused on building custom solutions for the researchers. And unlike its American and German competitors, which focuses on cells and human organs, Bio3D can print other biomaterials as well, allowing labs to study the interaction between bacteria and human cells.

By laying out cells in three-dimensions as opposed to a 2D plane, which is the current practice, it mimics the human body more accurately, thereby potentially yielding more accurate results. One compound can be applied to multiple cells, drastically simplifying the process.

Bio 3D printers could eventually print entire organs, which means that instead of injecting compounds into animals, they can be applied to printed organs without the need to dissect critters.

A potential “killer app” would be to create a credit card sized microcosm of the human body containing a garden of cells that are linked on a cellular level. A chemical could then be injected into the kit to test its effects on various types of cells.
