LifeSwap Is Airbnb for Careers

Entering the job market — let alone finding a job you love — can be daunting. A new startup called LifeSwap aims to ease the stresses of networking during the job search by coordinating career shadowing opportunities throughout the Bay Area.

Called the “Airbnb for careers,” LifeSwap allows users to connect with professionals in a specific job position or company and shadow them for a predetermined length of time, at a price set by the host. Current swaps range from shadowing a Ph.D. student to observing a henna tattoo artist, but the LifeSwap founders hope to provide experiences that educate professionals as they make career choices.

The idea for LifeSwap originated from a conversation that founder Bastiaan Janmaat had with a friend about the influence of his study abroad experience while in college.

“Is that the kind of experience that can be applied to a broader population set: Is it possible for anyone in any job to do an exchange program with somebody else in a different city to just learn some new things and step out of their lives?” he says.

LifeSwap was formed in March and its team now consists of Stanford students and alumni; they received funding from VC firm Northbridge Venture Partners after winning the Stanford GSB’s pitch event last spring. Through each member’s collegiate and professional experiences, a startup was born.

“We’re helping people make lifelong decisions,” says co-founder Mike Dorsey. “When you travel and are looking for hotels, you can go on Trip Advisor and you can pick among 20 hotels and you can read all the way down to the quality of linens and there is absolute transparency … Then people make lifelong career decisions with less information.”

Anyone in the Bay Area can register or request a particular job experience, but hosts are personally vetted by the LifeSwap team; likewise, a host can reject any request. Dorsey says the most popular swaps are professionally oriented and are typically a younger person shadowing an established professional during the workday. Some LifeSwap users have even received job offers after using the swap time for quick on-the-job training and to network within a company.

“Some of the most impactful [swaps], the ones we’re most excited about, are the ones that are professional-oriented,” Dorsey says. “It’s nice to have an adult learn to make a croissant, but that’s not going to change the world.”

LifeSwap makes money by taking a cut of each transacted swap, the cost of which is set by the host — the standard rate is around $65, an expense Dorsey says is worth it. You could follow a student for several hours rather than commit thousands of dollars to a multi-year program without having first-hand experience, he says.

The team also recently launched an “enterprise” option that schedules inter-company swaps for employees to pick up more skills at a specific company at a per-employee rate. In order to develop its software and provide feedback to HR departments, LifeSwap is currently focusing on tech companies in the Bay Area with around 1,000 employees.

“People aren’t happy if they’re not in a job that fits their gifts or passions,” Dorsey says. “For each swap, there’s a good chance we actually change their life and it has all these positive impacts on society and on the economy. We can actually change the world by giving people the ability to see what other lives are like.”

BeMyGuest gives travellers authentic experiences with local communities

BeMyGuest has just made it to the semi-finals of Asia’s most prestigious travel startup competition – WebinTravel, and officially launches.

Other than TechVenture, which took place earlier this week, WebInTravel is another notable event which holds one of Asia’s most prestigious web travel startup competition. BeMyGuest.travel, a website for local tourism officially announced its launch in conjunction with WebInTravel.

What is BeMyGuest?

BeMyGuest is a travel intermediary that helps local suppliers and travel intermediaries distribute local accommodation, activities and events to travellers. BeMyGuest claims to use data analytics and search algorithms to help make the recommendations relevant to travellers. Their main market focus is on emerging markets around the world, while targeting core tourism markets at the same time. “We want to be the booking engine with the most comprehensive local travel experience content, through capturing the long tail of travel”, says Clement Wong, the founder of BeMyGuest.

With BeMyGuest, guests and travellers will have access to a wide choice of local accommodations, local activities and local events, and local hosts are able to market their travel products without needing a huge marketing budget. They do this by listing their local accommodation, activities and events for free onto BeMyGuest. Hosts and guests can read reviews of each other. You can also compare activities and accommodations listings with one another to help you make better decisions.

Clement has extensive experience in the travel industry. Over his entire career, he has worked with airlines, hotels, tour operators, tourism boards, and consulted with investment banks to provide them with the analysis of the travel industry. He is also a regular speaker at travel conferences. BeMyGuest has also received two rounds of angel funding.

“Having worked in the area of travel technology and distribution, I have come to the conclusion that the long tail of travel – anything outside of air and hotels, has barely been covered. Just as airlines and hotels rely on intermediaries to distribute, BeMyGuest aims to be the travel intermediary to aggregate and distribute the long tail of travel. The real value of BeMyGuest: Content, Content, Content meets technology. Our content includes anything from just a room to the entire Sound of Music village, activities from a parkour class to flight to the edge of space, events from gigs to cultural shows – we aim to capture everything post flight booking.”

Other players in the similar space

Of course, the travel industry is a competitive space with many players looking to disrupt. In the peer-to-peer accommodation space, there is Roomorama, AirBnB, 9Flats, PandaBed, and recently funded travelmob. In the local activity discovery space, there is EvenPanda whom we heard has some exciting news soon. For those that do not need a local experience, there is also TripFlick which is a travel recommendation engine that offers you personalized travel trip. All these platforms involve extensive community building, and of course, the success of each platform depends on the “liquidity” of each event or accommodation listings. Will BeMyGuest survive in this competitive space?

FailCon: Nobody cares about your startup, and that’s a good thing, says Cheezburger’s Ben Huh

Ben Huh is responsible for much of the world’s lulz. As the founder of The Cheezburger Network, he is on a mission to make the world happy for five minutes a day. He also has a serious side: Through his new venture Circa, which just launched an app today, he wants to change the world of journalism.

But before he started a profitable business that posts cat photos online, Ben had gone through a dark phase in his life. When he failed at his first startup in 2001 and fell USD40,000 into debt, he became depressed.

“I couldn’t leave my house, I couldn’t leave my bedroom. I just couldn’t face the world,” he said at the keynote speech of the first-ever FailCon in Singapore. The burden of losing hundreds of thousands in investor’s money was too much for him to take.

It even left him suicidal. “Death was a good option — and it got better by the day,” he wrote in a blog post describing how he eventually climbed out of the hole.

Struggling with the emotional turmoil of failure was not pleasant for Ben Huh, but it was a valuable experience. It enabled him to stand on stage to share about his life with a dose of humor — thankfully.

破綻による感情的動揺との葛藤は、Ben Huh氏にとって喜ばしいものではなかったが、貴重な体験となった。でもありがたいことに、この経験がユーモア満載の彼の人生を世界と共有するきっかけとなったのである。

He observes how we are amnesic about the little failures — like new year resolutions for example — yet we make too much of a big deal out of our failed ventures.

“Argh, I shut that website down, I’m a failure,” he said.

“That’s bullshit. No one labels you a failure except you.”

Entrepreneurs tend to put themselves at the center of the universe when they fail, thinking that everyone will know about it and castigate them for it. Ben finds this mindset bizarre. Just like how a startup’s success isn’t necessarily a concern of everyone, failure isn’t exactly the first word that comes to everybody’s minds when one walks into a room.

At 35, the South Korean native is by all accounts a model of success. Ben says that Cheezburger.com is one of the top 50 entertainment sites in the United States today. Investors are so enamored towards the site that it raised a USD 30M Series A round led by Brad Feld’s Foundry Group.

Metamoji’s Note Anytime: Handwritten Notes on Your iPad

Readers may remember last year when we featured Metamoji’s 7notes iPad application, which conveniently converts your handwriting into text. Recently, the company also pushed out a similar note-taking application called Note Anywhere. And so far, Note Anywhere has been performing pretty well.

After about a week at number one in Japan as the top free app overall, it’s currently ranked ninth — although it is still first in the ‘productivity’ category. It appears to be catching on in the US market as well, and is currently number eight in the ‘productivity’ category there.

手書き文字をテキストに変換できるiPad アプリのMetamoji ７Noteを紹介したのを読者は覚えているだろう。近日、この会社は、Note Anywhereという同種のメモアプリを発表した。今の所、Note Anywhereは非常によく機能している。

日本の総合無料アプリランキングで1週間連続でトップの座に輝いた後、現在は第9位にランクインしているが、それでも「生産性」分野では依然として1位を獲得している。アメリカ市場でも徐々にと上位に食い込んでいるようで、現在「生産性」分野で第8位だ。

In contrast with 7notes, this new application not only lets you jot down notes by hand, but also lets you combine that with sketches, images, digital text, and other web content to create and share documents. While there isn’t the text conversion feature that we saw in 7notes, the floating palette interface makes it easy to write notes in different styles and colors.

7notesとは異なり、この新アプリは手書きで欠けるだけでなく、スケッチやイメージ、デジタルテキストや他のウェブ今テントを組合せ、共有する事も出来るのだ。7notesにあったテキストへの変換機能はないが、フローティング・パレットのインターフェイスを用いて、様々なスタイルや色でメモをとることが容易になっている。

Upon opening the app, you’re presented with a choice of note layout templates. From there you can take notes with your finger or with a stylus, although I recommend the latter if you’re going to be using it extensively. Your handwriting becomes a vector graphics element, which you can drag around the canvas an manipulate in many ways. If you’d like to add images from the web or your camera roll, you can do that as well.

Once you’ve finished, there are a number of sharing/export options, including social networks like Twitter, Facebook, or Tumblr, email, or send to your photo album or print.

メモが完了したら、TwitterやFacebook等のソーシャルネットワークや、Tumblr, email, アルバムや印刷用にに転送したりといった様々な共有/インポートオプションを選べるようになっている。

Of course the 7notes application was far from free at $7.99. So I found it curious that Metamoji had taken a different pricing approach with Note Anytime. Kyosuke Tsuda of Metamoji explained a little more about this decision:

Through our experience with 7notes, we learned that for the global market, even a $1 charge is not good [if we want] to expand our customer base. [So] we decided to follow Freemium strategy. Our strategy is not just on selling add-on of apps but extend server features after we launch Note Anytime for Windows 8, iPhone, and Android, [which is] planned within the next several months.

もちろん、7notesアプリは無料とは程遠い$7.99であった。MetamojiがNote Anytimeで違ったアプローチをしているのは興味深かった。Metamojiの津田キョウスケ氏はこの決定について少しばかり説明してくれた。

7notesでの経験を通して、グローバル市場において顧客を拡大したいと思うなら$1でさえもいいと値段と言えないと学んだので、当社は無料戦略に従うことに決めた。当社の戦略は、アプリのアドオンだけを販売するのではなく、今後数ヶ月中にNote AnytimeをWindows 8, iPhone, アンドロイドへ拡張した後に提供するサーバー機能を拡大する事だ。
