Pirate3D launches Buccaneer 3D printer in Japan and South Korea in partnership with Keienu Trading Company and Alien Technology respectively

Pirate3D, a 3D printing startup seed-funded by Red Dot Ventures and incubated by the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES), has signed a distributorship agreement with Keienu Trading Company to bring its Buccaneer 3D printer to the Japanese market from June 2014.

“We are very excited. Japan is a key market for Pirate3D, and this is a huge step for the company,” said Roger Chang, CEO, Pirate3D.

Not content with just the Buccaneer, Pirate3D also has other plans. It is going to build a repository of designs, which users can download and print easily. Additionally, it is going to develop a modelling program for users to create their own designs easily.

“We’re developing a 3D printing cloud service to enable our users to seamlessly download and print models in one click,” said Chang.

The final iteration of the first Buccaneer is currently available for pre-order at US$497 on the company’s website. It will start selling in Japan and Korea from June 2014.

China now has half a billion mobile web users, 618 million total internet users

China now has 618 million internet users and 500 million mobile web users, according to new figures today from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).

The new numbers from CNNIC are for December 2013. They show strong growth from the agency’s last report midway through 2013 when we saw that China had 591 million internet users and 460 million mobile netizens. The number of mobile web users has more than doubled from the end of 2009 when there were only 233 million accessing the web via phones.

WeChat leaps into banking, lets users set up online investment fund

Tencent (HKG:0700) has just joined China’s personal finance race alongside Alibaba and Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) with the latest addition to China’s most popular messaging app, WeChat. WeChat now has a “wealth” section where users can store their savings in a new monetary fund straight from their smartphones via TenPay, Tencent’s third-party payment system.

Whereas we originally thought the amount of money a user could deposit would be unlimited, TechWeb reports that amount is capped at RMB 1 million ($165,400). The annual rate on the fund is 6.435 percent, and it requires no minimum investment. The fund is managed by Huaxia Bank.

In WeChat’s 5.0 update from last year, Tencent already added a function that allows users to bind a bank card to their WeChat account for online and offline purchases. Since then, WeChat has let its users pay for taxi fares, movie tickets, lottery tickets, bill-splitting, and a few other goods and services.

Baidu’s Baifa fund maintains the highest interest rate of the three, but it’s capped at a certain amount its users can collectively invest. The real battle in privatized consumer financial services will take place between Alibaba and Tencent. Baidu does not have any widely popular products or services that require user registration; it’s mostly still used as a search engine. Alibaba’s Taobao and Alipay and Tencent’s WeChat are both massively popular and require registration, which gives them a captive audience.

Alibaba’s Yuebao remains the most popular for now. Yesterday, it reported more than 49 million customers have deposited over RMB 250 billion ($41.3 billion).

Bloomberg: Chinese e-commerce retailer Jingdong seeking $2 billion IPO

Beijing-based online retailer Jingdong, previously known as 360Buy, reportedly seeks to raise $2 billion in an IPO in the second half of this year, according to Bloomberg. Bloomberg cited “three people with knowledge of the matter.”

When Tech in Asia reached out to Jingdong for comment, their spokesperson replied, “JD.com has a corporate policy that it does not comment on market rumors.”

Bloomberg’s sources say Jingdong want to list on the US stock market, but Hong Kong is also on the table. Jingdong wants to avoid listing at the same time as its largest competitor, e-commerce titan Alibaba, which is also expected to go down as one of the biggest IPOs in financial history sometime this year.

Rumors of a potential IPO for Jingdong first surfaced back in 2011, when the company’s owner mentioned it might happen in 2013 or later.

While Alibaba is the largest e-commerce company in China, most of it’s sales are C2C, while Jingdong is a B2C retailer. The company is a trusted store when it comes to buying genuine products, everything from baby formula to iPhones.

In February last year, Saudi Arabian billionaire Prince Alwaleed bought a stake in Jingdong for about $700 million.

Indian condom brand Skore launches mobile app to help you locate pharmacies

Condoms are one of those products that you need when you need, but they’re not always readily available. That’s why Indian condom brand Skore has come out with a location-based Android app.

The new Skore app is the first of its kind in India. It features local maps that help men locate the nearest pharmacist. At present, the mobile app only works in Mumbai and a 100-kilometer radius of India’s financial hub. The app will soon add more cities. Obviously it’s only useful for finding stores that stock this particular brand. For other brands, you’ll have to stick to something like Google Maps to find a pharmacy.

Besides helping you track down a pack of condoms, the app has some rather exotic features. For instance, the app has a feature called Skoring Stances which is based on the Kama Sutra and other Hindu ancient literature on sex practices. It outlines about 100 positions you might like to try with your partner, and even imparts some other useful tips.

For the very shy, the Skore app links to a mobile store where users can buy condoms in secrecy.

Skore’s general marketing manager Vishal Vyas says his brand launched the app to differentiate itself from rival brands, and also to “advocate responsibility” in sexual health.

The Skore app is free for Android in Google Play. A version for iPhone is in the works.

The company began offering its classes for kids two years ago, using a specialized program called Simple that allows children to create programs using an easy-to-understand coding language. It plans to promote its courses to schools in the near future.
