What makes COODE different from rest of these services is its Q&A approach. Users can ask each other questions about fasion, and to answer, they create online collages using all sorts of fashion items. Another strengh of COODE is that it has professional stylists answering those questions. In that sense, it’s similar to Shoedazzle. The items in the collage can be also bought online from the brand’s website.

Some examples of questions asked would be:

“I just bought a camel fur scarf. How would I wear this to work?”
or
“I just dyed my hair back to black, what style do you think will go well with it?”

Many users ask for advice for appropriate clothing styles to suit different occasions. There is an interesting use case where one user asked others to coordinate his fashion style, and he ended up getting many answers from his friends. One of the suggestions looked like this.

Each user is given their own profile page, which includes an introduction, type of fasion with their strong points, favorite magazine, Twitter or Facebook accounts, and a blog URL. Users’ questions, answers, and the people they follow can be viewed as well.

Answers to a question can be rated with a Nice! button. And in the sidebar, there is a weekly ranking of users according to their Nice count. COODE creates its own original content too by interviewing the most popular user of the month. Some features in development are a “best answer” feature and a commenting feature. COODE also plans to use the Yahoo! Chiebukuro API (Q&A basically) which receives 3,000-5,000 questions per day.

For now the revenue is generated by advertising and through affiliates. COODE is created by PlayMined, which is led by 28 years old Mitsutaka Hamada. The start-up’s goal is to have 10,000 registered users within a year. We can expect to see iPhone and Android apps early next year.

Amazon Set To Take On Japan’s E-book Market [Report]

The Nikkei business daily is reporting that Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) could enter the Japanese e-book market sometime this year, bringing its new Kindle readers offerings along with it. It is said to be in late-stage negotiations with prominent Japanese publishers, including PHP Institute Inc, which is to provide about 1000 digital titles.

Last month we saw Amazon’s Japanese branch announce a call center in Sendai, which is not only good news for the earthquake-affected region, but also an important step to help support customer inquiries in the country.

According to this latest Nikkei report, the Japanese e-book market was worth about 65 billion yen ($846.9 million) in 2010. That pales in comparison to the market for printed books and magazines which is worth about two trillion yen.

Bringing affordable Kindle readers could certainly help shake up an industry that has been slow to take off thus far. But in an space where publishers hold a tighter grip on content than in the US, it remains to be seen if Amazon can offer the same kind of ebook discount pricing that it can give in other markets.

Homegrown online retailer Rakuten (JSD:4755) also recently jumped into the e-book space with its new Raboo online book store.

The Mobage Brand Is Everything to DeNA, Even As It Expands

I have written much about the expansion methods that both DeNA and GREE have adopted in recent months.

DeNA’s Mobage has chosen to expand into countries like China and the U.S by setting up Mobage China and Mobage U.S, respectively. It places emphasis on the Mobage brand while it expands abroad. I also recently learned that Mobage Southeast Asia is in the pipeline, and is projected to launch somewhere early to mid next year.

私はDeNaとGREEがここ数カ月において採用した展開方法について多く書いてきた。

GREE, on the other hand, took the partnership approach. It has partnered with Tencent in China and mig33 in Southeast Asia, and can boast a whopping 825 million combined user reach between these three networks. That is surely impressive and GREE isn’t about to stop partnering with other networks to increase its reach.

GREE’s expansion looks aggressive and has somewhat overshadowed DeNA’s slower expansion approach. I threw the “problem” straight to Tetsuya Mori, managing director of DeNA’s Singapore office, and asked whether DeNA is worried about its competitor.

Mori smiled and acknowledged that both companies are taking very different approaches. While he can’t speak for his competitor, Mori says that DeNA wants to maintain the Mobage brand as it expands abroad. Even in Japan, Mori says that all ads — traditional and digital — emphasize just the name Mobage without mentioning DeNA.

The 825 million figure which GREE boasts is just a number. Does GREE own the entire 825 million users? Unfortunately, no. The partnership lasts as long as both companies are still seeing mutual benefits. It works for now but who knows what will happen in the future? A good example is the relationship between Google and Apple, which has turned sour over the years.

DeNA, on the other hand, focuses more on platform ownership and user experience. While its numbers are smaller (over 30 million users in Mobage Japan as we last learned), introducing new games and upgrading its mobile gaming network is way simpler. That’s because they own Mobage and can ensure the user experience is seamless. GREE, on the other hand, loses partial control on Tencent or mig33’s platform. Nonetheless, GREE’s partnership with other giants has commanded much attention within the mobile gaming world and created a somewhat unified platform for developers to market their games on the GREE, Tencent, and mig33 networks.

Mori graciously acknowledged that what GREE has achieved is impressive. But that doesn’t mean that DeNA has bowed down to GREE. It’s way too early to tell.

Japanese Interview Site Reaches 2 Million Page Views A Day

How much do you really know a person? How well do you know your Twitter friends, or even your colleagues? In many cases, conversations are often limited to very casual and superficial topics. But a popular new web service in Japan is trying to help you get know know people a little better. It’s called The Interviews, and it is a fast-growing Q&A service for personal use that has taken off in Japan.

Just a few weeks after its release, its per-day page views have surpassed 2 million and it continues to get bigger every day. The service reminds me of Formspring, but in reverse. With Formspring, you decide to reveal certain secrets and facts about yourself that may surprise other people. (i.e. What’s your favorite band? What was the best moment in your college life?)

With The Interviews, people ask each other questions anonymously. The interviewer of a question is never revealed. This works well because there is an online culture in Japan that tends to prefer anonymity. The popularity of 2ch.net is evidence of this, but of course with the rise of sites like Twitter and Facebook, people are becoming more aware of the merits of an open profile. But when it comes to asking questions, anonymity enables people to ask questions that they might not otherwise ask.

All sorts of questions are asked on this new platform. There is a question for the former CEO, asking how he sees the current situation of the company he left. Someone else is asking a girl what she likes most about her boyfriend. The response rate is revealed on each person’s interview page. And so the more you answer, more questions you are likely to receive.

Each user is given their own interview page, listing questions from people and their answers to those questions. It is a detailed profile page that keeps getting updated. There are many convenient features including one that allows users to find people that they follow on Twitter, and also a feature to block certain interviwers.

As of September 1st, the number of registered users is 16,000. The Interviews was created by paperboy&co at it’s development camp.

Naver Japan’s Free Messenger App Hits 2 Million Downloads In Just 3 Months

It was back in June when Naver Japan, a Japanese local subsidiary of Korea’s search portal giant, introduced a mobile messenger app called Line. It enables free IP phone calls and group chat among up to 100 users at a time. On Friday, the company announced the app has remarkably hit more than 2 million downloads in just three months since its release.

Both the iPhone and Android apps are available for free. By registering your friends with their phone numbers, you are allowed to only connect with other users you know well. For group chatting with foreign language speakers, interpretation assistant functions were recently added, which helps you communicate in Japanese, Chinese, and English.

In Apple’s Appstore Social Networking category ranking, the app reached the top in Japan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, Singapore, Malaysia, Macau, and Hong Kong.

"In foreign countries, mobile operators mostly provide their users with no e-mail service, unlike Japanese operators. The users have no option other than SMS as text messaging and are required to pay for it additionally."

The company’s chief strategist of business development, Mr. Jun Masuda, says.

"Not a few messenger apps have been introduced, but we suppose our app [has gotten] a high reputation because it’s absolutely free."

The company expects to add video call and group call functions shortly.

Japanese Ad Company Mediba To Open Singapore Office

Japan’s Mediba Inc., an advertising unit owned by KDDI, announced today that it would be establishing an office in Singapore, in an effort to support its expanding business serving the rapidly growing Asian smartphone market.

The company said in its release that it is considering branches in Korea, China, Indonesia, and India as well. This of course, continues in a trend of Japanese internet companies tempted to look abroad by the allure of the smartphone market outside the nation’s borders.
