People spent extremely long hours at work well before the industrial revolution. However, research shows that they actually spent far fewer hours actually performing work due to limited light, a lackadaisical work ethic, and numerous religious observances. The shift-based work day schedule developed during the industrial age has lasted well through the information age, and has extended into even longer hours for most knowledge workers. What happened to John Maynard Keynes’ prediction of a 15 hour workweek where people’s needs could easily be met with very little work?

The study took in data from 2,200 pages across 15 months to determine how comtent performs. While gift guides and “get the look” content perform extraordinarily well from a traffic perspective over time, they are both in the minority when it comes to the type of content produced by publishers that want to generate affiliate revenues and commissions.
Thirty-eight percent of comtent is in the “deals and sales” category, and 25 percent is product reviews. Despite the strong traffic, gift guides make up only 3 percent of the content in the study. The reason? It appears that gift guides trail off quickly when it comes to generating commissions, which could be why they aren’t as popular.

Are VC services really over-hyped? The story of one firm’s middle path

On VentureBeat earlier this month, a European venture capitalist took some U.S. VCs to task for hyping “portfolio-support platforms” and other value-added services, presumably to the exclusion of old-fashioned company building. He derided investors who push a “bouquet of generic operational support resources” and warned entrepreneurs to be skeptical of these offerings — implying that young companies don’t need such services to bloom.
