Chat Apps are Everywhere. What’s Next?

In Asia, chat apps are popping up everywhere. In China, we have WeChat. In Korea, we have Kakaotalk. In Japan/Korea, we have Line. Throw in Whatsapp, and there is no shortage of choices for the average mobile user. In China, the chat app war is long over as WeChat (aka Weixin) has already won out, and most entrepreneurs don’t see the point in taking on Tencent.

But in the rest of Asia, chat apps are still popping up. There are chat apps for lovers (like Pair/Between/LoveBytes), and also for females (see Cubie) 1. I’m a little puzzled why people are launching chat apps as if there is some huge demand. Am I missing something? Or is there really much more room for growth?

Personally, I think it’s certainly way too crowded for general mobile chat apps to excel. The big players mentioned above have already snagged the mindshare of most users. The plus side of all this is that these apps appear to have proven that chat is very much a mobile activity that users want, especially here in Asia. And if an app is especially awesome, growth is typically very rapid. Certainly, there is still space for vertical chat apps to thrive.

The recent Cubie financing news is an apt example to draw from. It’s an app designed for females so naturally it comes with emoticons and lots of ‘girly’ stuff. Cubie likely won’t get as many users, but it has a niche and targeted female audience – and that could be very useful for bringing in advertising revenue. The startup has netted over 4 million users in the last six months alone, which I thought was quite impressive.

There’s also Momo, the flirtatious Chinese mobile/social chat app. It helps users to hook up with other people in a much easier way. To date, Momo has more than 16 million users, raised $40 million in funding, and will soon launch its international version.

So it looks like there’s really a big space for vertical chat apps. The trends make sense, just like there are general e-commerce sites and vertical e-commerce sites – there are success stories to be found in both categories. In a similar manner, I think chat apps could follow suit. Perhaps a chat app for corporate folks?

Any number of flavors could hold potential.

iCarsclub: Peer-to-Peer Car Sharing in Singapore

iCarsclub is an online marketplace that allows car owners to monetize their “free” car time through its car sharing scheme. Drivers who want to rent out their car when it’s free can do so, and those in need of a car nearby can find one. The platform creates a win-win situation by both lowering the costs of owning a car for owners, and rentees can also have the luxury of driving a car when the occasion arises without shouldering the burden of owning one.

The team also has a hardware system in place, called iCarBox, which enables keyless entry. Car rentees will be able to unlock the cars using their smartphones and start driving. With this keyless entry system, it aims to enhance the rental experience. Taking full advantage of the benefits of mobile, it allows users to find a car within a small area very easily. Interestingly, whilst everyone else is looking to China for better opportunities, the team is comprised of four mainland Chinese, with qualifications and backgrounds hailing from China’s top Tsinghua University and Baidu. They have chosen to launch their product in Singapore first. Jamie elaborates:

Singapore is the best place to test our our idea because of the high demand on private cars, [coupled with] better trust between people and overall safeness, such as low theft and low accident rates. Once our idea is validated in Singapore and [we have figured the ideal execution method], we can easily replicate our business in other cities similar to Singapore.

The team is indeed looking to expand its operations to China after Singapore, targeting first-tiered cities such as Beijing and Shanghai. The service sounds similar in many ways to YongChe or America’s ZipCar. Co-founder Eddy Zhang tells us that iCarsclub is different because it gathers from both private and business car owners, which allows higher flexibility in car model types and at the same time lowers the rates.

Cinemacraft Launches Videogram: A Slick, Multi-Thumbnail Web Video Interface

Yesterday we mentioned Taiwan-based startup Cubie, which had been accepted into the 500 Startups Accelerator program. Another Asia-based company that is also joining the program is Cinemacraft. In addition to making the shift to Silicon Valley, the startup has just released Videogram, a service that gives users a pictorial summary of the a video using an almost comic book-style, multi-panel display.

The company raised $780,000 earlier in the year from 500 Startups and angel investors in Japan and Singapore. I asked CEO and founder Sandeep Casi what kind of revenue model they have in store for Videogram. He notes that they will be focused on publisher and user acquisition for the time being. While the service certainly looks like an attractive solution for consumers, he notes that they also foresee Videogram being used for video ads on publisher sites.

Cacoo Goes to Indonesia, Strengthens its Community Outreach

The online diagram collaboration tool, Japan-based Cacoo, is now setting its eye on Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia.

Recently, I talked to Tabata Shinsuke (the CMO of NuLab) about the startup’s plan in Indonesia. He says he has been around the country, and traveled here quite a few times – the company even joined our Startup Asia Bandung Hackathon last month. And it looks like the team is digging into the local market. As it expands, the plan is to focus on these three things: users, developers, and designers.

Why is the charts site interested to explore the Indonesian market? Tabata explains:

Cacoo and Backlog are software for teams including designers and programmers. We believe it is necessary to approach users (including users-to-be) physically, so we are very interested to reach the Indonesian market and meet users in Indonesia.

With 600,000 users already onboard (after hitting half a million this summer), it will be interesting to see how it plans to maintain (and increase) its user-base around the world. At the moment, Tabata says, Cacoo’s users are mostly from Japan, the US, France, Brazil, and Columbia. In Asia, they are pretty strong in China and Taiwan.

As a part of this outreach in the region, the team held a ‘Cacooup’ in Taipei this year. They also interviewed some loyal users to hear their opinions, and featured them on the company’s blog.

To have a Bahasa Indonesia version should help bring in new users. Tabata also says they are hoping to have Cacoo integrated with Indonesian services using Cacoo’s API.

Tabata noted that in Indonesia, it’s important to connect both virtually and in real life.
