Location-based Social App Momo Starts Monetization with Emoticons and Subscription

Location-based social app Momo, launched 4.0 version with an emoticon market and subscription offerings, an obvious move for monetization.

The emoticon part must remind you of LINE, the Japan-based messaging app that made about $17 million from emoticons alone in Q1 2013, and the subscription model is a proven one in China, adopted by almost all kinds of Internet service for monetization, and still believed to be a good business model here.

The subscription package offers twelve privileges; for instance, subscribers can follow more users and have more people in a chatting group. It is sold for 12 yuan (about $1.9) per month or 30 yuan per quarter. It’d be cheaper if you subscribe to it for a year.

However, I’d soon be reminded that Chinese users would spend several hundred yuan on a QQ Show, a virtual costume or item created for Tencent’s QQ IM. And LINE also has justified the model.

Momo, launched in August 2011, announced 30 million users in March this year. It raised $2.5 million funding from Matrix Partners in 2011 and $40 million Series B funding from Alibaba Group, DST and Matrix Partners in August 2012.

DocDoc and DoctorPage Merge, Form New Company Called DocDoc

Instead of competing head on, doctor booking portals DocDoc (1) and DoctorPage have decided to merge with a common goal in mind: To become Asia’s largest premiere online health portal.

The merger combines both “DocDoc’s strength in the medical industry” and “DoctorPage’s expertise in digital marketing and patient acquisition”, says Immucor CEO and former Medtronic Chairman and CEO Bill Hawkins, who has invested in DocDoc.

The new merger will take the name DocDoc, bearing the same DocDoc logo design but wearing the corporate colours of DoctorPage (pictured right). It will have a large slice of the pie in the Singapore market, with a substantial presence in South Korea. DocDoc president Max-F. Scheichenost also revealed that three new countries are in the pipeline, too.

The resulting management team will see Grace Park, who boasts over 10 years of healthcare experience, reigning as CEO; Dawn Soo, who is a medical physician by training, as COO; Daniel Endres, former entrepreneur-in-residence at DailyDeal GmbH and operations manager at home24, as CIO; and Jon Samsel, managing director and founder at RoadLoans, as CMO.

・“Brand China” is poison. I wrote about this a while ago, but in part because of stereotypes and in part because of very real issues like government censorship and China’s political scuffles with its neighbors, a lot of non-Chinese web users simply don’t want to use Chinese services, and in fact will go to some lengths to avoid them. Simply being a Chinese tech company in and of itself puts you at a disadvantage in the international marketplace, so many companies choose not to bother trying to row against the tide.

・Entrenched competition. While many Chinese internet services have evolved into pretty unique platforms, most of the big ones started more or less as copies of successful Western services. But those Western services are still around, and outside China they have way higher user counts, way better brand recognition, and way more momentum. Chinese tech companies generally have enough competition to worry about domestically; trying to take on someone like Google internationally is hugely time-consuming and expensive.So, again, many companies choose to focus on the more-than-big-enough domestic market and just not bother trying to fight entrenched overseas competitors.

Of course, even given these issues, many Chinese companies are taking at least early steps towards expanding overseas. Baidu, for example, has been pretty active in Southeast Asia, with a research lab in Singapore, a portal site in Indonesia, and a security suite for Thailand, among other things. Tencent, of course, has the aforementioned WeChat that’s doing quite well overseas, and it likely won’t be long until other companies decide the risks are worth the potential rewards and follow suit.

CyberAgent Ventures Opens Registration for Monthly Sharing Sessions in Indonesia

CyberAgent Ventures (CAV) Indonesia has seen their share of startups in the country and believes that encouraging more people to discuss entrepreneurial issues and strategies is always a good thing. In this regard, the Japanese VC firm plans to hold regular sharing sessions in Indonesia to talk about various business case studies in specific sectors. It’ll be called the CAV Salon.

Mentors: Since the first generation of innovators are now in their retirement phase, they are offering both financial support and mentorship to the leaders of the next generation. Perhaps another reason disruptive technology has been emerging out of Israel is that the first settlers of the country had limited resources, pioneering a land that was primarily desert. So whether in agriculture, technology, or business, Israel is a land filled with pioneering minds and entrepreneurs.

Lifebit: An Online Social Diary That Will Challenge and Reward You
